Everyone has battle royale! – review of the game “Hyper Scape”

The battle royale genre has been on the market for a while and players have had time to enjoy it. Yes, productions of this type enjoy unflagging popularity, as evidenced by the results of Warzone , but this is no longer a special novelty. So is there still room for a new Ubisoft game in this otherwise crowded market? Let’s find out.

I have and me!

Hyper Scape, because that’s the title we are talking about, is the newest child of the French studio, known of course from such series as Assassin’s Creed or many games with the annotation “Tom Clancy’s” . This game is the company’s response to the constant popularity of battle royale production , which has been the leading trend in computer games for several years. As in the past, MMORPG or MOBY chains (such as Liga Legend) were in vogue, now the eyes of many players around the world spend their sleepless nights on a genre that loosely draws its foundations from Japanese and then American cinema. If you are interested, see the movie entitled (and how) Battle Royale from 2000 and, of course, the Hunger Gameswith Jennifer Lawrence. However, speaking of the beginnings of this type of game, it is impossible to ignore the famous Playerunknown’s Battleground , which grew out of the mod for the Arma war simulator . The further story is, of course, Fortnite and the company, such as the futuristic Apex Legends or this year’s Warzone from Activision, so the past is not that distant again. Nevertheless, I am quoting these headings to outline a problem, namely fairly strong, well-established competition. Each of these three items, despite drawing on the same basis, has something different, which means it goes to a slightly different group. Fortnite is perfect for younger audiences,Apex Legends will be for sci-fi fans, while Warzone’s production is basically a limited Call of Duty Multiplayer . Behind each of these titles is a large, experienced studio, which will certainly not give up the field to a debutant. Was this theatrical delay disastrous for Ubisoft?

Who comes late …

Before we get down to whether Hyper Scape has any raison d’être, it’s worth saying a few words about what this game is really about. Ubisoft’s latest production is a futuristic shooter that slightly combines elements known from the Mirror’s Edge series or its direct competitor Apex Legends. There is no question of parkour here, but the ability to navigate the urban jungle plays a fairly important role, which sometimes includes the need to run on roofs. So it might seem that the game will be extremely dynamic? Well, not exactly, or at least not as promised by the developers. The numb movement of characters or the inability to use the environment to carry out any advanced maneuvers effectively make the game difficult and discourage exploring the map, which is also not the most successful. The intricate urban thicket will sooner cause players to get lost in the network of alleys than to use some complicated tactics. I also found the weapon upgrading system strange, which consists in increasing the already acquired weapons in order to improve predetermined parameters. Each, anyone who prefers to customize their weapons will be disappointed. On the plus side, I could only include special skills, which are also found on the map and can be improved in the same way. While their balance is far from perfect, they add a bit of variety to the game. I also positively evaluate a slightly different mode, namely faction wars, where four teams of 33 people fight each other for domination. Besides, it is rather poor.

… it harms itself

It’s hard for me to find anything that could prove the special value of Hyper Scape . Ubisoft’s production does not stand out with absolutely nothing, and this also applies to the visual and sound setting. Both Textures and Animations are of average quality. For some reason, I really disliked the work of the light. The map is strangely illuminated at times, as if “from a fluorescent lamp”. Fighting noises are terribly flat, and some guns sound like a spoon tapping on cardboard. I understand this is only beta, but something is strongly wrong with the spatiality of the sound in Hyper Scape.

A bit too late

The French studio definitely missed its chance to release a solid battle royale . Hyper Scape has nothing in it that could keep the user captivated for longer. The game looks like a clumsy blend of well-worn ideas, and where you could win something, the studio gave you the body in its entirety. The fancy integration with Twitch also gives little, thanks to which viewers can influence the game (e.g. by dropping first aid kits). What is one “feature” in the face of a general flop? Answer yourselves.

Nasza ocena: 2/10

Hyper Scape is a late game, even unnecessary. This production doesn't bring anything special to the genre and feels like just a poor attempt at jumping into the box office.
