Marvel Studios presents Eternals – the 25th MCU movie – and all-new adventures of ten superheroes who have never appeared before. Immortal heroes hidden for thousands of years, in the face of threat, must join forces to fight the oldest enemies of mankind – the Deviants. The cast is made up of excellent actors (including Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kit Harington), and the director is Chloé Zhao, who won two Oscars. Premiere on Blu-ray ™, Blu-ray ™ Steelbook and DVD will appear on March 23!
The Eternals are immortal beings from the distant planet Olympia. They came to Earth thousands of years ago to protect humanity from attacks by alien predators called the Deviants. They learned about this attack from the Celestials who first appeared in the Marvel Universe in Guardians of the Galaxy . The Eternals are a diverse and powerful group – a fusion of warrior thinkers in whom the same cosmic energy manifests itself in the form of different superpowers, depending on the superhero. Their special forces and abilities complement each other when they work together. However, when they are not fighting, they behave like an ordinary family – they argue and take turns supporting.
The film was inspired by the original Marvel comics by Jack Kirby Eternals , first published in 1976. The stories contained in them allowed to discover hitherto unexplored time spaces and various characters, as well as delve into the rich history of the Eternals.
The story told in the film takes place on two time planes. One part takes place in the past when the Eternals have acted as a powerful team and a family that is very close to each other. The second part of the action takes place in the present, when the group breaks up and hides among people, leading a normal life with them. However, the danger of the Deviants threatening human existence once again means that the Eternals must put aside what separates them and re-team.
We want viewers to discover a corner of the Marvel Universe that they have never seen before , says Nate Moore, who was responsible for the production of the film with Kevin Feig. They both decided to introduce these new, fascinating characters to the Marvel world of superheroes. We want people to discover a mythology that, on the one hand, is complex science fiction, but on the other hand, there is also a lot of heart and emotions. We invite them to meet ten heroes with whom they will hopefully be able to identify – adds the producer.
The superheroes who make up the Eternals are the largest team of new characters in the Marvel Universe to date in a single movie. The group is also unique in that it is made up of the same number of men and women, and is the most international and diverse collection of characters in one MCU production to date.
Interesting in “Eternals”, if only in terms of narration, is that both the Celestials and the Eternals recruited people who would make it easier for them to integrate with the inhabitants of the Earth. And the truth is that on our planet people have settled in many different places, they belong to different backgrounds, they are of different ages, they have very different appearances. This allowed us to complete a talented cast of actors from all over the world, says producer Nate Moore.
The cast is therefore wide and numerous, and the stars of world cinema play the roles of fascinating characters. The role of Ajak – matriarch, spiritual leader of the group and the only character who has direct contact with the Celestials was played by Salma Hayek, and next to her we can also see Oscar® winner Angelina Jolie ( Interrupted Music Lesson ), who played the role of the extremely strong warrior Thena , Gemma Chan ( Captain Marvel ) in a role focused on helping others thinker Sersi , or Richard Madden ( Bodyguard , Game of Thrones ) as a powerful warrior Ikaris, able to fly and shoot powerful rays from the eyes.
No less important heroes of the film are the other members of the Eternals: mind-controlling thinker Druig (Barry Keoghan), releasing powerful gusts of energy from his hands, the warrior Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), gifted with extraordinary wisdom Phastos inventor (Brian Tyree Henry), the fastest woman in the Makkari universe ( Lauren Ridloff), who can make the invisible Sprite (Lia McHugh) and the strongest of all Gilgamesh Eternals (Don Lee aka Ma Dong-Seok). Together with them, we can also see Kit Harington, known from Game of Thrones , as Dane Whitman – a close friend of Sersia.
As always, Marvel Studios also tries to cooperate with filmmakers who inspire with their creativity and original vision. For the film Eternals , the studio team decided to work with Chloé Zhao, a talented director of Chinese origin, known for the Oscar® – winning Nomadland and two other independent films: The Rider and Song of My Brothers .
It is rare for filmmakers to find someone like Chloé capable of capturing true human emotions in stunning science-fiction scenes. When we watched her work with the cast of “Eternals”, we were very excited to see how the special moments she captures give the Marvel Universe credibility and evoke great emotions , ”explains Nate Moore. Chloé allows each of the ten Eternals to speak with their own voice and makes each of them appear on the screen. In addition, he is not afraid of unconventional humor, sometimes even in surprising moments, which greatly influenced the tone of the film. Her vision and passion with which she entered this project are second to none .
Zhao gladly accepted the challenge of directing this massive production because she had always loved Marvel movies.
These worlds are full of emotions, great characters and epic adventures – says the director. They are made of people who really love storytelling and have great respect for their fans. I went into this process as a creator, but also as a fan. Being able to make a stand-alone movie, but also to celebrate what was before, expand the mythology and shape the future of the Marvel Universe, was an exciting challenge. It’s an honor to be part of this adventure , adds Zhao.
The scale of the entire venture could be daunting for most filmmakers. But Chloé’s good eye for detail, coupled with her enthusiasm for storytelling with images, gave Eternals its own palette of expression – both in terms of photo locations and visual effects , says Moore.
Eternals is one of Marvel Studios’ most ambitious projects. The epic sweep of history spans over 7,000 years on Earth and in space. For a director who uses a naturalistic style in her films, it was important to set the story in the right locations. That is why she wanted the photos to be taken in authentic places as much as possible. As a result, the locations of the film included, among others London and British villages, but also the Canary Islands.
When telling this story, we wanted to capture both its momentum and intimacy. We also needed to make it visually coherent somehow, ”explains Zhao.We mainly shot outdoors. We used wide-angle spherical lenses and a large depth of field to be able to study the relationship between the characters and the world they live in. Watching Sersi stroll through a village in ancient Babylon is no different than watching Fern stroll through the modern nomad camp of Nomadland. The work of the camera, wide-angle lenses and large depth of field allow viewers to discover this world on their own in our frames. The visual experience of this movie must be engaging and interactive enough for viewers to believe that these characters have walked the Earth for 7,000 years. It cannot be built in a studio or on stage .
Eternals is one of the most watched movies in theaters last year. Over 430,000 viewers saw the latest production of MCU in Poland. The movie will be released on Blu-ray ™ , Blu-ray ™ Steelbook and DVD on March 23.
