Imagine you are a ball named Baller. Life like this shouldn’t be rather complicated, right? And here’s a surprise! You are a ball in the world of squares and the only chance to improve your situation is fighting in the gladiatorial arena.
I’m looking for a game; I know there should be more people …
My gaming choices are quite simple. It is enough that in the announcement I see acceptable graphics and the multiplayer option and I’m already quite interested. In this case, these two elements also made me decide to reach for Cubers: Arena . This game, released by Teyon (responsible for, for example, Terminator Resistance ) is available on PS4, PC, SWITCH and XONE, I got acquainted with it on “pleju”.
History without history
In fact, I summarized the story of Cubers: Arena in the first paragraph. There is absolutely nothing else in it. There aren’t even any cutscenes or dialogues during the games, so if you like stories, you will be severely disappointed here. Does this work against the game itself? It’s hard to say. Its aim was not to present a specific story, but to provide entertainment by systematically hitting subsequent opponents.
Come on! Beat! Murder!
The gameplay is extremely simple. As a Baller, you have to fight in the arena, but to do it effectively, you need to invest in your development. To do this, you move around the village, which is also the menu of the game. In it, you have the opportunity to visit a mage who combines special crystals with your equipment, a merchant supplying us with equipment (of course for the appropriate amount), a teacher associated with acquiring new skills and, of course, a village guard who lets us into the arenas.
Seemingly little, but a lot
Although not much happens in this production, the player has some tasks to do. The main character is pretty lame at the start, and to develop it, we need money from arena battles. So we have to fight, collect money and improve our “stats” and skills. Fortunately, there are quite a few combinations and choices, be it weapons or skills. In turn, there are 4 arenas throughout the game, so the surroundings also slightly change from time to time. With successive wins, our character gains higher ranks and unlocks new items of equipment, so he gradually becomes stronger and faster defeats opponents (many of whom appear on the boards).
Hey, I don’t want to be a champion though
Unfortunately, it only sounds interesting in the description, as the impression of novelty passes quickly and the repetition of tasks is simply boring. Also, the catchy multi options in co-op or mini-games do not save this title enough that I would like to recommend it to everyone (although mini-games can work well when meeting friends). The association that came to my mind in the case of this title are mobile games, because the simplicity of control and the appearance of the game is perfect for a phone for me. I read on the Internet that supposedly this title is aimed at younger audiences – maybe it is so, but it still does not justify the fact that it simply does not delight and bore.
Lord, you can’t hear anything!
Finally, a few words about graphics and music. The soundtrack is practically not here. Oh, noises from the game every now and then. The visual layer, on the other hand, is acceptable. I have nothing to complain about, because in this case I also do not know what to expect from the balls and squares. The only thing that disturbed me a lot was the colors of the arenas too dark, because at times I had problems with seeing where I was and what was going on.
The arena ball returns on the target
This game may appeal to someone who is looking for an uncomplicated title with a co-op option and mini-games to play in a five-minute break from some larger task (I think it could work, for example, in chill rooms in software houses or corporations!) . I didn’t like it and, to be honest, I got a little tired with it.
