An amazing universe
Kohty Hirano’s manga primarily impresses with its original and crazy idea. Well, the mangaka threw historical figures into the reality of fantasy, in which different races clash with each other. Therefore, we will see such classic creatures as elves, dragons and dwarves, and at the same time we will see a portrait of Adolf Hitler on the wall in the castle! The appearance of historical figures from our realities has far-reaching consequences. For example, the way war is conducted is changing due to the production of firearms. The most interesting thing is that besides technology, there is also magic. It was this crazy concept that attracted me to this manga. For this reason, I have enjoyed delving into all six volumes on the market.
A full-blown war
The fifth and sixth volumes are already a roller coaster ride. Previously, we had to deal with duels or skirmishes between units, there was also, of course, the siege of the capital, but in the newest parts, the biggest clash takes place. This time, the protagonists will face the Dark Lord’s army, made up of dragons and giants, for the first time! It cannot be denied that, as in the previous parts, Oda Nobunaga’s brilliant strategies make an amazing impression. After all, knocking down a giant armed with bouncing armor is a real challenge! Anyway, this is not the end of surprises waiting for readers in these two volumes!
Controversial ideas
While the plot is extremely addictive, and Kohta Hirano constantly throws up some interesting thread, there may be some controversy with the heroes. Perhaps the biggest one concerns the identity of the Lord of Darkness. Already after the first few volumes, you can guess what character is hidden under the hood, after all, few heroes are able to multiply food and heal the wounded by just a touch! Another example is the mockery of Joan of Arc’s too small breasts. It is worth bearing in mind when reaching for this comic. Kohta Hirano does not take prisoners, so who knows, maybe one day Muhammad himself will wander into his world! Of course, the author made his compatriots the main heroes. So, although characters from all over the world appear on the pages of this manga, roughly half of them come from the Land of the Rising Sun. Regardless of nationality, however, all the personas created by Kohta Hirano are extremely intriguing and amazing. And the meetings of characters from different historical eras are especially interesting!
Japanese martial art
Kohta Hirano’s line is very pretty. The color of monsters, such as dragons and giants, is interesting. Combat scenes involving more heroes are often epic, but sometimes too chaotic. In the sixth volume, I paid special attention to the scene where Shizamu Toyohisa and his companions break through the enemy army. At times it felt as if these numerous enemy forces were not there. I just didn’t see that loop tightening around the characters at all. In my opinion, it was the graphics that lacked more drama in this scene. I must pay special attention to the publication. In addition to additions, in the form of some interesting comments from the translator or humorous, completely frivolous statements by Hirano, the covers feature historical characters that could appear in the manga!
Is it worth joining the Drifters?
Drifters is an extremely original and fascinating comic. The author has a whole lot of brilliant ideas, and the combination of magic with technology and famous characters from our history is an explosive mixture. Volume six ended with an interesting but predictable twist. I will be happy to read the next volumes, although I realize that it will be a long time before the sequel appears. Nevertheless, I think it is really worth waiting for the next volumes. I recommend everyone to see how much Hitler can mess up in the fantasy world, and what can result from the meeting between Scipio and the Japanese pilot!
