I’m one of those hated people who complain ruthlessly about Marvel . Despite being Spider-Man’s psychophan, each new Avengers movie made my fan flair lose its strength. Repeatability, well-worn motives, predictable fights. A cosmic bereavement with a giant purple alien made me fall asleep midway through the movie. Then I started to wonder where is my beloved Marvel? Where are these fascinating Punisher or Ghost Rider stories hidden? What happened to Stan Lee’s creations that made me want to be bitten by a radioactive spider? Will the dancing Tobey Maguire never come back?

Interwoven realities

He’s back. The latest Spider-Man movie gave me hope in the Universe (now it’s Multiverse in all), and my love for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man series was rewarded. So what was my excitement when it was this director, responsible for the first spider trilogy, who was announced the creator of the latest film: Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ! The expectations were huge. After the last Spider-Man screeningviewers saw that the idea of ​​intertwined realities offers great opportunities. Actors from other movies can now logically come to the screen. Fans were delighted to see Willie Dafoe return to the role of the Green Goblin, and their hopes for the next movie grew. It just means that they have become unrealistic about halfway through the road. Tom Cruise as Iron Man, Deadpool’s cameo, Daredevil’s return, Spidey’s death – at some point these reports got out of hand. I must admit, however, that even I quietly believed that at least some of them would come true.

Fulfilled expectations

And they came true. Without unnecessary spoilers, it can be said that a lot of famous characters actually appeared on the screen. However, the atmosphere of the film itself is a bigger surprise. As we know, Sam Raimi is a director who became famous not only for his Spider-Mania paintings. He is also known as the creator of the Evil Dead series . And it is in the Multiverse of Madnesshe is letting go of his horror-steeped fantasy. The main antagonist is Wanda – Scarlet Witch – who decides (under the influence of a demonic spellbook and using other realities) to get her children back. This is to be done at the cost of the life of a girl traveling through the universe, America Chavez, and many people will die along the way. The title Dr. Strange stands in the way. As it turns out, a pissed off witch can be really brutal.

Not very family friendly

The dead body is thick. And not in the way we know from Avengers , which could be described as family friendly. Gouged out eyes, visible wounds, exploding heads – a huge range of truly spectacular deaths. After the first minutes, the viewer will realize that this is not a typical “Marvel movie”. The parent will probably decide that this is a good time to evacuate their child from the cinema room. And the farther into the plot, the less family it gets. Raimi himself spares no jump scares, but also moments and tricks typical of horror movies. Crooked figures coming out of the mirror, possessions, bloody witch marching towards her victims. Here, too, can be exchanged for a long time. But my point is, this isn’t the superhero cinema you might expect. Violence is closer to Deadpool , and the level of fear is less extreme horror cinema.

A breath of freshness

Is that a good solution? From my perspective – great. I do not know how the parents of young viewers who went to the cinemas with a positive attitude after the first part of Dr. Strange. For me, however, it was a breath of fresh air in the Marvel universe, as well as a real firecracker in terms of both plot and visuals. Both the shots and the music are reminiscent of old Raimi films, which in my opinion is a great advantage. Some, however, complain about the story holes. There is a lot going on in the film, and the screen time is not so much. Due to this, in fact, you can notice the stretching of threads in places, and characters can die with it, they will stay on the screen for good. However, it did not offend me. Another recurring objection is the marginal role of Dr. Strange. It is alleged that this is actually a painting about Wanda. I didn’t notice that either, and Benedict Cumberbatch had the opportunity to once again show his acting skills.

Sam Raimi the king of superheroes!

This film cannot be ignored. In my opinion, this is a light in the tunnel of Marvel’s film future – I have already lost my hope after another candy screenings full of sparkling heroes. I could no longer bear the playful dialogues of muscular heroes in the face of the destruction of the entire planet (once again, this Earth is a terribly unlucky place). This time we get something completely different. Dark, brutal and surprising. That’s what I needed, and Sam Raimi proved once again that both superhero cinema and horror are his element!
