The entire film is as touching as it is intriguing. Donnie Darko awakens to the belief that there are only 28 days left until the end of the world. He is stuck in a time loop, which belief may also be simply a symptom of a mental illness – this is not explained by the creators. Frank, awakening the protagonist, saved his life, while disrupting the natural order of the world. The question of a parallel universe and cause and effect paradoxes arise many times. After the premiere, the mantra of the film was one sentence that was deeply remembered by fans: Every living creature on Earth dies alone. Despite the director’s explanations, there is no single, correct interpretation of the work, which makes the production even more unique, and for many – cult.
The premiere of the film took place on January 19, 2001. Interestingly, the work on the set lasted exactly 28 days – exactly as long as Frank was supposed to remain until the extermination. The American producer Richard Kelly is responsible for both the directing and the script. In the film, we could see actors such as Jake Gyllenhaal (Donald J. Darko), Jena Malone (Gretchen Ross), Holmes Osborne (Eddie Darko), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Elizabeth Darko), Daveigh Chase (Samantha Darko), Mary McDonnell (Rose Darko) ), James Duval (Frank) and Patrick Swayze (Jim Cunningham). The film received 5 nominations, including for the Saturn Award.
