In 2006, the Wizards of Mickey series began to appear on the Italian market . Two years later, in the eleventh volume of MegaGiga , titled With Magic and Sword , this series made its debut in Poland. Well, the combination of fantasy, comics and Disney characters turned out to be a hit for many, but as soon as the idea caught on, the idea of publishing more parts was killed so quickly. Until now…
How to enchant with magic in the world of Mickey Mouse
We know not from today that the Italians create their own version of the adventures of Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse, of course sticking to the original elements. Screenwriter Stefano Ambrosio also approaches the subject in his own way, and thus we will not see Mickey like in the short film The Sorcerer’s Apprentice . Of course, there will be some similarities, because at the beginning of our adventure, the eared guy is a student of an experienced wizard who, nomen omen, strongly dates back to Tolkien’s mythology, and his name is Grandalf.
The title of this review is not accidental, because following the next frames, I have the impression that I found myself in some RPG. Here we have a mage who develops his skill tree until he grows up to use some magical artifacts called comic book Magiamentami.
In addition to the standard good characters from the Mickey Mouse universe, there were also villains led by the insidious Phantom, who wants to get the most valuable artifact, namely the Crystal Crown. He is assisted in this by Black Peter and the Be Brothers. There is also a famous witch, Magika De Czar.
Issue issue
In the latest reissue of Wizards and Their History, we have three original omnibus editions, which was not the case with the first edition from 2008. Quite well; Compared to Western releases, we even get a certain coherent thread, but something is missing. And I’m not talking about paper from traditional Giants , because chalk paper is more pleasant for the fingers, and the hard cover protects the comic book better, but the price of over PLN 80 is a bit of an exaggeration, especially since we will not find any additional materials, unlike other comics editions Disney in Poland.
Of course, the fantastic elements in this comic have been treated with a pinch of salt, but I think Ambrosio plays with them in a proper way, making older readers enjoy the parody of their favorite motifs, while for younger readers Wizards and their stories are gateway to the world of magic and fantasy. They can instill in the young generation not necessarily adoration, but certainly a dose of interest in the magical reality.
The graphic design known from other Italian pulps, which are available in various types of Gigant , is also conducive to this, because the younger reader is already familiar with this world. Cartoonists, on the other hand, meticulously do their homework for both comic book writers and illustrators of this type of story. We have gloomy castles straight from legendary tales, creatures, dark forests where people are haunted, and other dimensions. Interestingly, we are dealing with over eight cartoonists, and the whole composition seems to be quite coherent.
In conclusion, we are not dealing with something outstanding here, but it is a simple read that will make the time of both big and small more pleasant.
