Black Widow was originally scheduled to come out in May 2020. Unfortunately, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, this date was postponed to November 6 of the same year, and now it is May 7, 2021. This means that the premiere is already postponed by over a year, and there is still no certainty that In three months, Marvel fans will sit in theaters. It all depends on the rate of vaccination, and hence – the opening of cinemas.
However, Disney CEO Bob Chapek confirmed the studio’s plans to maintain this form of the Black Widow premiere . During a quarterly interview with investors, Chapek stated that the studio will keep an eye on developments and remain “flexible”:
At the moment, our strategy is to stay in theaters for the premiere. However, we will be watching the course of events very, very carefully
It looks like Black Widow is an experiment of sorts. Despite the possibility of releasing the production to cinemas and the Disney + platform at the same time, this time the studio plans to choose a different path. At the same time, Bob Chapek points to the success of Mulan (access in cinemas and via Disney +), which made Ray and the last dragon debut in an identical way . In the words of the CEO, some titles will allow the collection of “data to test the effectiveness of access via a streaming platform with simultaneous theatrical release”, and “single decisions” will be made for each production.
