During the Walt Disney Studio panel at the D23 Expo, plans were announced for an upcoming sequel to The Lion King . In addition to the title and the potential premiere, it was mentioned what the production itself should look like. Apparently, the action will take place in two time frames. The story will focus on Mufasa’s origins and his path to power. The panelists also received a short trailer. Unfortunately, it is not available online.
The director will be Barry Jenkins and the script will be Jeff Nathanson.
I grew up with these characters, they mean a lot to me. I think the work that Jeff Nathanson has done, going back to helping the children and anyone who has ever loved the story, will all be very challenging. Kings aren’t just born. They have to become who they are through a series of events with which many people can relate. I don’t feel pressured, I just want to do a good job.
Jenkins explained in an interview last month.
In a 2020 interview, Jenkins mentioned that he was absolutely thrilled with the script and couldn’t stop reading it. He believed that the story was amazing and hardly anyone makes such productions. So let’s hope that the sequel will actually turn out to be as big a hit as the director announced.
