The reason for this decision was not given. One can only guess that del Toro and Netflix decided to take this step in order not to overwhelm the Oscars with their productions. The new film by Mexican director Nightmare Alley is due out on December 3, and there is already talk about the Oscar hype it can cause.
Pinocchio del Toro will be a dark version of the famous fairy tale about a wooden boy, set in Italy during the nascent fascism of Mussolini. We can expect the terrible, disturbing climate characteristic of Mexican films and a return to the convention of observing the world of totalitarianism and violence through the eyes of a child, as in the Labyrinth of the Faun .
In the preview, Netflix described the dark animation as follows:
is a story of love and disobedience as Pinocchio tries to live up to his father’s expectations.
Even though Del Toro previously produced animated films such as Kung Fu Panda 3 and the Guardians of Dreams, this is his directorial debut. Although the first plans for the Dark Pinocchio project were made ten years ago, it was not until 2018 that Netflix allowed him to produce an adaptation.
The animation features the voices of actors such as Tilda Swinton, Ewan McGregor, Finn Wolfhard, Daniel Radcliffe, Cate Blanchett and David Bradley.
