Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake recently concluded its first season. Production co-creator Adam Muto shared what he thinks about continuing the series.

Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake recently concluded its first season. With the spin-off arriving on MAX , the animated series became a huge hit for the streaming service. With Fionna and Cake ending , no one is sure if it will get a second season, although one of the series’ creators is confident that the Land of Ooo will return at some point in the future. Fionna and Cake’s adventure opened up the multiverse, which means there’s certainly a lot more territory to explore if Adventure Time returns.

The original Adventure Time series came to an end in 2018, but was continued by the spin-off Distant Lands, which focused not only on Finn and Jake’s final adventure, but also the many supporting characters that populated the Land of Ooo. Thanks to Fionna and Cake, fans were given a story that focused on Simon Petrikov, the man who was once the Ice King, when he discovered that two fan-fiction characters were much more real than anyone originally thought. With the show’s continued success, there may be more stories focusing on supporting characters in the future.

Is Adventure Time! will come back?

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, co-creator Adam Muto details that while nothing is set in stone about the future of the animated series, he is confident the series will return.

I think streaming has made it much more difficult to predict the life of what will happen in another iteration of the show, because I’m sure it will, but I have no idea when. I think in the meantime we’ll just develop things and see what next year looks like.

Muto also took the opportunity to explain how fan influence determined which characters appeared in the spin-offs, which could continue to influence the series if it returns.

I think this particularly influenced which characters appeared. Because if they had an established fan base, and the show is kind of aimed at fans, there are certain characters that are better suited for a new series than others. For example, it would be difficult to make a series of Mr. Pig, the Shelby series, or the snail series because the world was so expansive that you could focus on everything. But I’m pretty sure Max wouldn’t say yes to many of these ideas. So I think the fact that Fionna and Cake episodes tended to get pretty high ratings when they were linear kind of made it an easier sell when we were figuring out what the series could be.
