*The title of this Latin song ( It's Gonna Be That You Don't Love Me ) featured in the latest Warner Bros. Discovery and DC, may be a replacement for the name of the latest movie. Why? Because this movie is really good, and yet it will not perform well at the box office.
Another Iron Man begins the universe
Have you heard of Blue Beetle? Probably most of you not so much. For me, the best production that has so far adapted the adventures of this little-known superhero was the second season of The Young League. He presented us with the genesis of the beetle’s power and the threat posed by the planet it came from.
However, the viewers had to be presented with everything from the beginning. And although there was no room to develop the entire genesis of Dan Garret, DC Studios nevertheless made sure to provide a quick summary in the opening credits, where the story of the second most popular blue insect – Ted Kord – was presented in several images. Thus, the film is not a normal origin story , although on its shoulders there is an introduction to the new DC cinematic universe created by James Gunn.
In this title, the creators focus on the last comic incarnation of Blue Beetle – Jaime Reyes. Best of all, this film, without departing from the main plot, weaves many flavors from the space where Batman and Superman exist. Fans notice the well-known hamburger franchise – Big Belly Burger, and even a reference to the rotten city (Jaime is a recent law graduate from Gotham University, as indicated by his sweatshirt), besides the production sticks firmly to the Hispanic tradition. Jaime’s home, which in the comic is the city of El Paso, Texas, has not been forgotten either. This time the action takes place in Palmera City, however, the Reyes family hacienda is located on El Paso Street. There were also references to other pop culture creations, such as the Mortal Kombat movie and the famous “Get Over Here”.
Of course, this is an American film, but a lot of emphasis was placed on Latin Americanness. It is visible almost everywhere. A multi-generational family, loud, amused, and at the same time mixing English with Hispanic Spanish, throwing a pendejo left and right when someone annoys them. It is true that all this is slightly tweaked by the American vision that Hollywood creates, nevertheless, it can be considered that Jaime Reyes is the first full-blooded Hispanic superhero in the DC cinematic universe.

Feel like on a paradise island
Rising star Xolo Maridueña is great in the role. Thanks to him, the main character is not only a determined, hot-blooded Latino, but above all a young man who, after graduation, has to face the adult world, where not only the lack of livelihood for his family is a problem, but above all global peace. Another important character in this film is Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), who entangles Jaime in a whole machine of problems. Bruna Marquezine not only created a lady in need, which we can see in every knitwear movie, but above all, a partner of flesh and blood like Lois Lane.
The worst in my opinion is the evil warmonger – Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon). Of course, her motives in the film are understandable, but a bit far-fetched, because how many times have we seen evil who only wanted money. On the other hand, Conrad Carapax (Raoul Trujillo), who accompanies her on the screen, may not be very talkative, but his story touches the heart and shows probably the greatest problem of our times – neo-colonialism, which is used by great world empires against poorer countries.
The fun wouldn’t be half as good if it wasn’t for the music. Numerous songs from the 80s and 90s can create the right atmosphere at a specific moment in the film. From a clash with evildoers to casual conversations between heroes.
Some Marvel, some DC
The CGI is also really good. The special effects, the main character’s outfit, and the antagonists do not hurt us as much as what we saw in The Flash. The film itself is really enjoyable, while retaining the darkness of DC in places , and using cheerful family jokes and music like titles from the first phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In general , Blue Beetle is a very good summer blockbuster , but it certainly will not knock anyone to their knees with innovative solutions, because they are simply not in this picture. However, it can keep the viewer interested and entertained throughout the screening, providing a rollercoaster of emotions.
We would like to thank the Cinema City cinema chain for the opportunity to watch the movie Blue Beetle !
