Doctor, heal yourself
As a reminder: the concept of the Purification Night – Americans’ new national holiday – seems brilliant in its simplicity: here for one night a year, exactly twelve hours, the law ceases to apply, and all crimes – including murder – become legal. Emergency services do not accept reports, the police do not intervene. The “celebrators” (and casual victims who simply did not have time to hide) are left to themselves. This time we will follow the solemn carnage, accompanying the marriage of illegal immigrants from across the southern border (Ana de la Reguera, Tenoch Huerta) and a family of wealthy ranchers (we will see Will Patton as the doyen of the family, and his children – Josh Lucas and Leven Rambin). Both groups decide to wait the night in a safe haven so that they can get back to their daily routine in the morning. They will quickly find out that in the streets you can still meet aggressors blinded by hatred, ready to kill in the name of a racially homogeneous (white, of course) America. The country is in chaos – this Purification Night is to turn out to be much longer than the previous ones …

In the West, no change
What is the series born in the mind of James DeMonaco – the main writer and originator – everyone can see. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that we will once again see intense chaff flowing with gory, rhythmicized by cyclic shots from various types of firearms and loud explosions *. The multitude of stimuli constructing this symphony of destruction and cruelty overwhelms, even desensitizes, which is saddening because the authors themselves quite accurately identify and score problems consuming the contemporary world. Social tensions resulting from deepening economic inequalities, political radicalization exacerbated by social media algorithms, racial divisions deeply rooted in American society, the fragility of modern democracy – all this finds its outlet in the form of a disorderly, bloody carnage, which in the long run is simply exhausting. The message, although it seems noble in fact, is laid out with a subtlety worthy of Patryk Vega (moreover, associations with the ace of Polish cinematography also evoke shots from the perspective of a camera attached to the wheel of a speeding car) – phrases taken alive from the comment section under any online article are shouted at every step, and the morals that the authors want to instill in viewers, regularly repeated by news broadcasters or radio announcers (depending on the medium which happens to be closest to the characters), so that the distracted viewer does not accidentally misread what the author meant. The whole thing only engages in moments – for example when we follow long, fluid it is lined with a subtlety worthy of Patryk Vega (moreover, associations with the ace of Polish cinematography also evoke shots from the perspective of a camera attached to the wheel arch of a speeding car) – phrases taken alive from the comment section under any online article are shouted at every step, and the morals that the creators want to instill viewers, regularly repeated by news broadcasters or radio announcers (depending on the medium which happens to be closest to the characters) so that the distracted viewer does not accidentally misread what the author meant. It is also worth appreciating the attempt to give Farewell, America the stylistic flair of a classic western, after all, associations with the realities of the Wild West – the times of universal lynching, rule of violence and negligible authority of the authorities – come to mind.

Do you like to be scared? Turn on the news!
Most Goodbye, America seems to be losing in comparison with the reality …. The same issues and problems that Everardo Gout (director) and DeMonaco try to overexpose by extreme exaggeration are happening here and now – and have quite real consequences. The material for years was provided in the United States by the presidency of Donald Trump (which by its example – just like the ringleaders of The Forever Purge – allowed aggression) and the growing popularity of populist radicals in other regions of the world; The fire is poured with the ever-recurring reports of further hacker attacks, and the grassroots actions of the ever-expanding group of QAnon supporters are taking the toll. The icing on the cake – a worldwide pandemic. This is one of those cases where truth scares more than fiction, so those who regularly follow the daily press or documentaries about the challenges and problems of the present day are unlikely to be impressed by The Forever Purge.
It is also always surprising that in the face of unlimited dispensation from the letter of every law, the only thing that seems to people’s mind is to grab a pitchfork and stab your annoying neighbor. What about fiscal crimes, what about swindles that will provide abominable wealth and eliminate, at least individually, the issue of economic inequality? (That what, that has already been played? In the majesty of the law? Big Short ?) Why, in the face of unlimited possibilities, most resort to murder only? Oh, local patriotism – there is nothing more American than a white-tailed eagle, warm apple pie and good old genocide.
* Which should not surprise us if we notice that Michael Bay is among the producers of the series.
We invite you to the movie The Forever Purge to the Cinema City network!
