Communists, Marauders and Terminator – review of the third season of the series “Stranger Things”

Źródło: geeklife.pl

After the great success of the first two seasons of the Stranger Things series, Netflix decided to continue it. The greatest concerns were related to whether the creators would run out of ideas and the viewers would not be given the so-called “Reheated cutlet”.

New Dangers at Hawkins

After the events of previous seasons of Stranger Things , life at Hawkins returns to normal. A new shopping center is built, which becomes an entertainment center for all residents. At the same time, a big festival is planned to celebrate the Independence Day. Heroes grow up and change. Mike and Nastka have their first love and spend time mainly with each other, which Hopper doesn’t like. Lucas, in turn, starts dating Max – they too prefer their own company. Will is devastated by the fact that his friends prefer girlfriends to playing Dungeons & Dragons together. Dustin returns from the science camp, who also cannot find himself among his friends. He spends more and more time with Steve, who now works in an ice cream parlor. Nancy and Jonathan start working at the local newspaper. Joyce, on the other hand, still misses Bob and secretly plans to move. The personal problems of the heroes go aside, however, when Russians planning to open the portal to the other side appear in the city. Their actions awaken the Mind Raider eager to conquer the seemingly sleepy Hawkins first, and then the rest of the world.

Darker and more bloody

The first season of Stranger Things was a real hit. Although the second turned out to be great, it began to whine that it was a replay of the entertainment, in which the recipient gets Will’s kidnapping again, and the action is based on the plot of the secret Hawkins laboratory and the experiments taking place there. There were concerns that the next installment of the series would not provide new emotions and its level would start to decline. Fortunately, the Duffer brothers, the creators of the series, did not allow this to happen. They took a chance and decided to introduce to Stranger Thingsmuch more horror, puzzles and blood. It worked. Although we get the same atmosphere for which we love the series, the characters and emotions associated with the events in Hawkins jumped to a higher level. In the third season, we get three main threads. Here we have a mind raider who wants to destroy Nastka. She is defended and helped by Mike, Will, Lucas, Max, as well as Nancy and Jonathan (who also conducts the journalistic investigation). Hopper and Joyce, meanwhile, deal with the “bad” Russians. Dustin, Steve, Erica and the new heroine – Robin are also involved in the development of the communist network. I must admit that each thread is extremely addictive not only because of the secrets and spectacular actions taken straight from sensational films, but also thanks to the interactions of the characters. The youngest heroes grew up and began to have completely different interests than before – this causes numerous conflicts between them. Older people also experience love and family problems. However, all of them can unite in the moment of danger, and the few twists ending this season are a big surprise. I would also like to add that despite many changes, the series still retains the atmosphere of the 1980s. Appropriate costumes for people on the streets, the appearance of food products and cinema premieres were selected. Also the songs, both those that the characters turn on and sing for themselves, and those that act as the soundtrack, were perfectly matched. On the one hand, they are hits from those years, and on the other hand, their words fit perfectly with the events on the screen. There was also Older people also experience love and family problems. The most obvious is a Soviet muscle man that looks and sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator . You have to look for other flavors yourself. All this means that fans will be impatiently waiting for the continuation of the series, which, fortunately, has already been announced.

Favorite hero? Everybody!

In addition to the great script and climate, the lead actors also deserve praise, who not only empathize with their characters, but also have a great time on the set. All this makes everything look natural, and it is easier for the viewer to identify with them and feel the emotions associated with the events presented on the screen. It is impossible to distinguish one or several people here, because everyone contributes something to the plot to a greater or lesser extent. Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) makes a great duo with Jim Hopper (David Harbor). Their dialogues, disputes and actions are fun, which breaks the dark atmosphere of the series. Especially when Brett Gelman joins them with his exaggerated but comical Murray. But when it gets hotter, their collaboration bears fruit, and the last scene together can lead to tears. The creators did not forget about how well-matched duo turned out to be Dustin and Steve (i.e. Gaten Matarazzo and Joe Kerry). That is why fate brought them together this time. And from the very first scene and the greeting, the viewer has the impression that he sees two buddies who miss each other a lot. This time, however, they are not alone. Their team is joined by Priah Ferguson and Maya Hawke playing – respectively – Erika and Robin. Two girls bring a lot of confusion to boys’ lives. The plot of Eleven was also very interesting, and Millie Bobby Brown once again proved herself in this role. Apart from possessing superhuman powers and fighting enemies with the help of mysterious power, she also begins to be an ordinary teenager meeting boys, gossiping and shopping. In addition to her, we also developed a lot of Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer), which shows her character and begins to take matters into her own hands. She is no longer a shy girl standing aside, but a woman fighting for her rights. Billy (Dacre Montgomery) had already shown his dark face. The third season allowed the characters to spread their wings even more and become one of the antagonists. Most importantly, Mike and Lucas (Finn Wolfhard and Caleb McLaughlin) also perform very well, as they have grown up strongly and are interested in girls more than games. It is fun to listen to teenagers giving each other heart advice. Against the background of all the characters, Will (Noah Schnapp) fares slightly less, whose role is mainly limited to whining, following the rest of the group and sensing the Raider. It’s a pity, because when he gets a more interesting action to play, such as venting his anger,

Keep it up

The third season of Stranger Things is a brand new adventure for the people of Hawkins. The creators took it a step further, taking the series to the next level. More darkness and mystery was a plus, making the series even more interesting. It can be said that Stranger Things has grown up, as have its heroes. This is no longer just a series for teenagers, but a thriller that can give the viewer the creeps. At the same time, it has not lost any of its specific climate. It’s still fun and nostalgic. This mix may have been risky, but it turned out great in the end. Fans should not be disappointed, what’s more – the group of supporters may increase. Let’s hope that the next season will keep pace with its predecessor.
