He is driven by ordinary revenge, so even he himself does not think that his little private war will initiate great changes on the entire planet … Vincent Perriot, born in 1984, is a French author of comics such as “DOG” or “Paci”, as well as a cartoonist for the series “Taïga rouge” and “Belleville story” (both scenes by Arnaud Malherbe). Masters of Comics. Western

Screenplay by Jean Van Hamme

Drawings: Grzegorz Rosiński

Translation: Ksenia Chamerska

On July 18, 1868, Ambrosius Van Deer, after a long search, found his fourteen-year-old nephew Eddie. The boy stayed with the Sioux for ten years, the day the Indians murdered his parents and brothers. Neither my uncle, the greatest cattle farmer in the Wild West, nor my nephew expected that this family reunion would end in a real tragedy. And it will change their lives forever … This is the beginning of “Western” – an album by the masters of comics – Grzegorz Rosiński and Jean Van Hamme. The originator of the project was Grzegorz Rosiński: “One day I suggested to Jean Van Hamme to repeat the experience of“ Szninkiel ”and create an album that would allow us to break away from the world of Thorgal for a moment. I offered him three topics that I had never drawn before: an erotic story, a story about pirates and a western … ”It turned out that Van Hamme had dreamed of writing a Western script for many years. Concentrating on portraying the fate of white settlers, Van Hamme retained most of the elements found in classic westerns. So there is a lonely trapper, a corrupt sheriff, a gang of Bass brothers who the whole neighborhood trembles before, a beautiful ranch owner, a tragic love, and the main character, although he does not have one hand, is an incomparable shooter. However, “Western”, unlike the movie classics, does not retain the traditional division into good and bad, and does not glorify Hollywood virtues. Like in Greek mythology, Van Hamme’s heroes unsuccessfully try to escape from their destiny and thus get into more and more trouble. This extraordinary story was illustrated in an original way by Rosiński. The colors of the boards are kept in sand, so the drawings bring to mind old photographs. The only elements that enliven some of the boards are intense red stains of blood, which, by the way, are pouring quite abundantly in this comic book.
