Masters of Comics. Yans, vol 1
Script: Andre-Paul Duchâteau
Drawings: Grzegorz Rosiński
Translation: Wojciech Birek

The series about the adventures of a space agent, started in 1980, became the second, next to the Thorgal saga, the flagship work of Polish comic book cartoonist Grzegorz Rosiński, made for the Belgian publishing house Lombard. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, this SF story about the adventures of a mysterious stranger was created in difficult conditions. The Belgian screenwriter André-Paul Duchâteau and the Polish cartoonist were divided by the Iron Curtain. However, thanks to the combination of the imagination and talent of both artists, “Yans” became a comic hit in the West, as well as in Poland. The twelve-volume series has developed its own poetic style and original mythology. Grzegorz Rosiński created it until 1990, and then handed it over to Zbigniew Kasprzak – Kasa.
The first part of the three-volume collective edition contains a fascinating story, based on the memories of the authors and illustrated with documents, about the circumstances of the creation of this extraordinary series, a short standalone comic book about Yans entitled “Tower of Despair”, as well as the first four full-length episodes: “The Last Island”, “Prisoner of Eternity”, “The Mutants of Xanai” and “The Gladiators”.

Masters of Comics. Black Orchid
Screenplay: Neil Gaiman
Drawings: Dave McKean
Translation: Paulina Braiter

Susan Linden was brutally murdered. To avenge his death, he is reborn as the Black Orchid – a hybrid of man and plant. Using his human memory and the power derived from plants, he tries to unravel the network of deceptions and secrets that led to her murder and find the murderer.
The album, nominated for the Eisner and Harvey awards, was created by two giants of American comics: Neil Gaiman (author of, among others, the “Sandman” series and the albums “Murders and Secrets”, “Harlequin and Valentine’s Day”, “The Last Temptation”) and Dave McKean, one of the most respected contemporary graphic designers, illustrator and filmmaker (“Arkham Asylum”). McKean is also the author of the covers for the “Sandman” series and incl. Tori Amos and Alice Cooper album covers.
“Black Orchid” is a story that, although it tells about a superheroine – the title Black Orchid – does not resemble typical comics about heroes in capes. This is not a story about the salvation of the world, the triumph of good over demonic forces of evil. The story begins in a very unusual way and becomes even stranger with each page it passes. The album became a landmark work in the history of modern comics. This tale of Susan Linden’s extraordinary life, deconstructing and reviving the genre at the same time, embodies a new maturity of graphic storytelling that revolutionized the comic book world. As the author himself says, if you enter this world, you will find yourself in a place where all accepted genre traditions have been rejected, and a new mythology has appeared instead,
The new issue of Black Orchid includes Black Orchid # 1–3, as well as an introduction by journalist Mikal Gilmore, and Neil Gaiman’s unpublished sketches, notes and mockups.

Complaint of the Lost Lands, cycle 2. Knights of Grace
Screenplay: Jean Dufaux
Drawings: Phillippe Delaby
Translation: Wojciech Birek

Collective edition of the continuation of the best-selling series “Complaint of the Lost Lands”, a classic fantasy saga by Grzegorz Rosiński, the creator of “Thorgal”. The first cycle consisted of four volumes and told about the assumption of the throne of the Sudenne by the young Sioban and about her struggle with the evil magician Bedlam. The second cycle takes the reader back into the past. Before the Sioban era, there were Knights of Grace in the Lost Lands who tried to rid the island of ancient demons, created by the first inhabitants of these lands, witches. The Morigans were the most terrible of witches – they fed on human flesh and disguised their terrible faces as young girls. At home among the humans, Morigan had no trouble killing many of the unfortunates before the Knights of Grace could track her down and kill her. Everything changes when one of them touched by Grace, she is reborn as a good sorceress and, wishing to save people from her bloodthirsty sisters, reveals the secrets of witches to the Knights of Grace. Two knights – the experienced Sill Valt and the young man Seamus – the future mentor of Sioban – are sent to find the sorceress. The forces of darkness sent by the Morigans stand in their way …
Inside the album there are four volumes of the second cycle entitled “Knights of Grace”: “Morigany”, “Guinea Lord”, “Sorceress Sanctus” and “Sill Valt” and introduction and additional sketches. The drawings were created this time by a Beigian artist Phillippe Delaby. The artist, who liked the realistic convention, proposed a different artistic vision than Rosiński, but you have to admit that it was absolutely not worse. The precision with which the details of the world presented, such as architecture, as well as the colors that perfectly reflect the described aura and nature, are particularly delightful. The author of the script is, as in the first series, Jean Dufaux. Thanks to the sudden twists and dynamics of the images, this comic book looks like a movie.

In the eleventh volume – believe it or not – Morty finds … a friend! But it is known that Rick can screw things up. Later, Morty crashes onto a crazy planet. There will also be – attention! – dwarfs. It will be weird, scary and funny.
The comic, just like the series, is full of references to classic pop culture works with particular emphasis on fantasy and horror – from “Doctor Who”, “Dark Zones”, “Jurassic Park” and “Star Trek” to “Inception”, “Nightmare on Elm Street” “Or” Star Wars “.

Kajko and Kokosz. In Krajinie Borostraszkōw
Screenplay: Janusz Christa
Drawings: Janusz Christa
Translation: Grzegorz Buchalik

“Kajko i Kokosz – We Krajinie Borostraszkōw” (or “W Krainie Borostworów”) is the second album translated into Silesian (years ago, the album “Kajko i Kokosz – Szkoła furganio” was released by Egmont). The series tells the story of two warriors – the brave and prudent Kajk and the voracious and selfish Kokosz, who defend Mirmiłów against the attacks of the evil Robbers led by Hegemon and experience lots of fun adventures.
The comic book was created in the 1970s and 1980s and was one of the showpieces of the youth magazine Świat Młodych. In 2003, the Egmont Polska publishing house resumed the series, and thanks to this reissue, all parts of the comic were first published in color.
The inhabitants of Mirmilów love to play, and they are real masters in coming up with excuses to celebrate. They have just finished celebrating the Goodness Day for Cows, and are already beginning to enjoy the most important celebration – in honor of Clean Water. Meanwhile, the Zbójcerze already have a plan on how to disrupt this beautiful and joyful time for the Mirmilovians, and as a result – take over their castle. The corporal appoints a volunteer for a suicide mission: a robber famous for avoiding all forms of washing and cleaning is to jump into the well in Mirmilów and contaminate its water for all time. Surprisingly, Corporal’s plan is implemented in one hundred percent! The water is poisoned and the city is deprived of the life-giving liquid. What to do? The solution is suggested by the Witch Jaga: only Lady Nature, who lives in the Borostwory Land – distant and wild, can restore pure water and happiness to the castle.
The unusual, extremely colorful and strong Silesian language combined with the unique humor of Chirsty is great fun and, at the same time, an auxiliary material in the cultivation of this language.
