Chickens, take cover, here comes the fox – review of the comic book “Big Bad Fox”

The Big Bad Fox was awarded the Best Children’s Album at the Angoulême Festival. So what’s so special about Benjamin Renner’s comic?

 

Who is the big bad fox?

Life is not easy for foxes. Nobody is afraid of them, and nobody even takes them seriously! Chickens, instead of running away from fear, are able to retaliate. So what is left for such a poor fox to eat? Turnip! And here’s another beautiful day. The fox enters the farm. All animals greet him politely, after all, his “round” has become a routine. The pig is already announcing that he is going to kick turnips, and the dog, the brave watchman, only reminds him that he has a lot of cleaning because of him. That’s why he threatens him for the first time… that he will have to clean up after himself. The big bad fox, full of determination, rushes into the henhouse, bites the hen in the rump and runs in panic from the furious mother hen! To the horseradish with such a life, right? For this reason, the last hope of the fox is a terrible wolf! It is he who offers him a new tactic. This time, she’s about to sneak in and steal the eggs. When the chickens hatch and get fat, they are perfect for a delicious feast for the wolf and the fox! But it turns out life is full of surprises!

A wolf, a fox and three chickens

The Big Bad Fox is just a warm, positive, incredibly funny, memorable story. It may not be overly original – it is known in which direction the plot is going. Nevertheless, it’s full of gags, and the characters are cute, funny, and so well drawn that it’s just hard to break away from this comic book. The fox is terribly free and incompetent, but very nice at the same time. His reactions and expressions provoke volleys of laughter. Dog with Big Bad Foxit doesn’t give a damn. He is very reluctant to perform any duties, is so lazy that he cannot even come up with a proper excuse. And he always sends to work a reliable duo – a pig and a rabbit. Each character is fun and interesting in its own way. Even a bird that appears suddenly in a few frames! He enters into a very funny dialogue with the fox. It is during this meeting that scandalous terms such as “cuckoo” are used. The protagonist, however, forgot that offending your mother, even a little bird, is not a good idea!

The charms of living in the countryside

The graphic design stands out from other comics. We do not have typical frames or even speech bubbles here. The author and his style are characterized by minimalism. Most of the scenes are devoid of any background. On the other hand, it cannot be denied that the heart of the whole story is well-written heroes. So even if there were some buildings or trees in the background, you wouldn’t pay attention to them. As for the characters, the author perfectly shows their emotions: cute faces often express more than the words they say! In the end, I liked the style of Benjamin Renner very much, although it cannot be denied that the first time you read the book, the unused place, this ubiquitous whiteness, is particularly striking. The comic was published in a paperback with wings. I have nothing to complain about here. Just a solid job in executionOf the Culture of Wrath .

Was it worth making friends with a fox?

Big Bad Fox is a brilliant comic book that will provide fun for both children and adults. While we have one coherent story here, even reading a random page can put a smile on your face. I want to have it always at hand, because I know that even reading a few frames will cheer me up. A brilliant story, great, funny, cute heroes and a lot of humor, and, as befits a good fairy tale, we also have a moral here. In its category, the Big Bad Fox is an absolute gem. I recommend this comic to everyone!
