Let the Games begin! On Wednesday, Lionsgate shared a new trailer for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Birds and Snakes and a new poster featuring the all-star ensemble of the Hunger Games prequel . Based on the 2020 novel by Suzanne Collins, the film takes place over 60 years before Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) became the winner of the 74th Hunger Games and before young Coriolanus “Coryo” Snow (Tom Blyth) became the villainous President Pan (Donald Sutherland ).
Who can you spot on the poster?
The poster features (from left to right) Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman (Jason Schwartzman), a weather presenter who became the first television host of the 10th Games, Coriolanus’ cousin, Tigris Snow (Hunter Schafer); Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a tribute from District 12 who is mentored by Coriolanus; 18-year-old “Coryo” (Blyth); Coriolanus’ good friend Sejanus Plinth (Josh Andrès Rivera), who coined the nickname “Coryo”; Dr. Volumnia Gaul (Viola Davis), the main Organizer of the 10th Hunger Games; and Casca “Cas” Highbottom (Peter Dinklage), dean of Capitol Academy, credited as the architect of The Hunger Games.
What is the movie about?
Years before he became the despotic President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen out of favor in the post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, young Snow is anxious when he is assigned to Lucy Gray Baird, a tribute from the impoverished District 12. But after Lucy Gray steals Panem’s full attention by singing defiantly during the harvest ceremony, Snow he thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Combining their performance instincts and newfound political knowledge, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is the songbird and who is the snake.
Francis Lawrence – who directed 2013’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Mockingjay – returns to direct the prequel.
This is the kind of playground that doesn’t come around very often, so when you get the chance to come back, it’s incredibly rewarding.
Lawrence said during an appearance at CineEurope earlier this year.
It doesn’t look like the series revival is trying to repeat the previous films. It’s a new story, with new ground and new characters. We managed to create a completely different visual language… one that is still recognizable as Panem, but also different and fresh.
– said The Hunger Games series producer Nina Jacobson.
The Hunger Games : The Ballad of Birds and Snakes will be released in theaters on November 17!
