Bruce vs Batman! – review of the comic book “Batman. Ego and Other Tails”

Batman. Ego and Other Tails is a collection of eight works made by Darwyn Cooke. Is it worth getting to know this artist’s work?

The Dark Knight’s Dilemmas

This collection consists of eight different stories. Darwyn Cooke was both an entire comic book writer and for some stories he was only responsible for the drawings or only for the script. For this reason, a variety of styles dominate the cards of this position. Usually, when dealing with a collection of works by some creator, you can expect to find a few weaker positions. This was the case with the unfortunate hundred-page comic book about the Spectral Visitor from Mike Mignola’s genius universe . Whereas Batman. Ego and other tails this respect, however, he surprised me, because all the stories contained here are very good! We have a great, extremely atmospheric story about Bruce’s struggle with himself, about the struggle with trauma. In addition, an incredibly addictive story with Selina in the lead role! Interestingly, vSelina’s Big Leap forward does not appear as Black Cat, but as a thief using her real name. Thus, you can also treat this comic as a great sensational story! There were also some lighter comics. One tells about Harley Quinn’s struggle with the passing of time, and another focuses on the monument that has been erected to the Dark Knight. However, in the Police Congress , Batman , he collaborates with Spirit! By the way, it was only thanks to this comic that I met this superhero for the first time.

Selina enters the game

I really want to say something good about each of the stories. Unfortunately, to present all the advantages of a given comic, I would not have enough space. So I will only focus on three interesting, unique stories in my opinion. Déjà vu , like no other Batman story, shows perfectly well that the Dark Knight can inspire fear in criminals. Importantly, Bruce does not utter a single word throughout this short adventure. Nevertheless, his gestures, as well as suddenly appearing or disappearing, create a great atmosphere of terror. In the Monumenthowever, an unusual situation occurs, because the Dark Knight has been erected the title monument. What will the inhabitants and criminals say? But most importantly, how will Bruce react to this unusual situation? A short, funny story in which Batman has an extremely square jaw! Undoubtedly, the gem of this collection is Ego ! Darwyn Cooke skillfully portrayed the dialogue between Bruce and Batman. As the author put it himself, he had a stupid idea to put these heroes in front of him, and ultimately it was this idea that had evolved into a memorable story.

Square chin

Darwyn Cooke was undoubtedly a very gifted cartoonist. His line is captivating, I especially like the dark representation of Bruce’s alter ego in Ego . Two black and white comics are also interesting, especially Batman’s square chin and Madame X’s nasty face. I have no major objections to the release. At the end, there are a few alternative covers, and there are also very interesting afterword by the author himself, which explains the course of work on individual comics.

Is it worth getting to know Darwyn Cooke’s work?

Batman. Ego and Other Tails is a must-have for any Dark Knight lover! Eight very good stories, but everyone will find something good for themselves here. In addition to darker stories, there are also light, lovable ones, such as the great comic book about Batman’s “date”, and even a very funny story with Harley Quinn.
