Bob Odenkirk stars in ‘The Room’ remake

Bob Odenkirk will star in the remake of The Room . Fortunately, the film is made for charity. Will it be an intentional display of kitsch this time?

Bob Odenkirk, actor known m.in. from Better Call Saul or Nobody, he will play the lead role in Tommy Wiseau’s remake of The Room . The production is made for charity. It will be distributed by Acting For a Cause, a charity fundraiser. Proceeds will likely go to amfAR , the Foundation for AIDS Research.

Rumors about Odenkirk’s appearance in The Room started spreading earlier this week. They reached a climax when the Slashfilm portal finally confirmed the news. The actor responded to this with enthusiastic confirmation.

It’s real. That’s true. And let me tell you, I tried my best to SELL each poem as honestly as I could… and I had a blast.

Most of the film was apparently shot on the so-called green screen, which gives it an inimitable, low-budget character. Several well-known names are to appear in the remake, although they have not been revealed at the moment.

The Room , released in 2003, was written, directed and produced by Wiseau, who also starred in the film. In the Vanity project, he played Johnny, an abandoned lover who suspects his best friend and his girlfriend are having an affair. But that synopsis struggles to convey the unbalanced nature of the script and performances. The Room became a favorite with online reviewers, who (either intentionally or accidentally) turned it into an absolutely must-have screening for moviegoers so awful they’re great .

The original The Room , is so oddly filmed and acted that it became popular as a comedy. Wiseau was reportedly initially hurt by this, but later states that the film was always meant to be satirical.

Wiseau’s friend and collaborator Greg Sestero wrote an autobiographical account of the production of  The Room , in which he emphasized how strange the American director was and how very strange the filming conditions were. The book, titled The Disaster Artist , was later adapted into a feature film by director and star James Franco.
