The Egmont publishing house made fans of the DC universe happy and released the third stand in the DC Deck Building Game series . The two previous ones, DC Superhero Duel and DC ‘s Eternal Evil , convinced players that building a deck in the comic book edition was a bull’s eye. Small additions ( Guardians, Crisis and Rogues ) enriched the games not only with new cards, but also new modes, incl. cooperative and with secret roles. All large boxes can be combined with each other or you can choose only the ones that we like the most.
Before I move on to the description of the rules, I must admit that comics are not within my interests, but books, movies, series and games that draw on them – yes. Not all characters appearing on the cards are known to me, but I update my knowledge on a regular basis. On the other hand, alternative Lands, where the fate of the same person unfolded in a diametrically different way, fascinate me both in the Marvel and DC universes. Thanks to this concept, all the supervillains we will have to fight are different incarnations of Wayne, including Dawnbuster (Bruce, who found the Green Lantern Corps ring) and Destroyer (Batman infected with the Doomsday virus). Of course, Batman Who Laughs comes to the fore. He looks at us from the box, the superhero trapping tile, and in addition he cannot be defeated.
Get a better team
DC Batman Metal is a typical deckbuilding, in which we start with the starting deck and try to improve it throughout the rest of the game. We get 7 Blows, 3 Helplessness and 2 Heroes, and we choose one of them. Batman lands underneath the Batman Who Laughs tile, so he never starts out as one of the players. Separately, we build piles of Heroes, Breaches, Weaknesses and Rogues. The latter must be specially prepared – we put the Barbatos on the bottom, and on it in a random order three thugs with a cost of 11, and then three more with a cost of 9. The remaining cards form the main deck, which should be placed in the center of the table and put next to the top five – it will be a card bank.
The players take turns consecutively. On our move, we choose five cards from our own pile, and then play them face up on the table in any order, collecting points for which we can buy heroes, rogues, equipment, locations or superpowers from the market. Some cards have an additional effect, such as drawing more cards, throwing Weaknesses into your opponent’s deck, or making your opponents discard something from your hand.
If we manage to gather enough power, we can face the Super Villain. They are getting stronger and the final thug is Barbatos, defeating him ends the game. Everyone scores their points from their own decks (the stars in the lower left corner of their cards), and the person with the highest score wins.
Fine, dark, accessible
The rules are very simple, we even have no other option but to draw five cards and place them. All the fun is to skillfully build your deck, get rid of the “stuffers” and buy those that will be compatible with the cards you already have and our Superheroes. Thanks to this, even younger fans of the DC universe will be able to enjoy the gameplay in their favorite world.
After defeating the Super Villain, we can free one hero from the Batman Who Laughs. So we have the option of recruiting more heroes to our team, but also losing them when we get too many Weaknesses. However, nothing for free – each enemy entering the game negatively affects players by destroying their cards, reducing the pot in your hand, or throwing Weaknesses into the deck.
I like the design very much – from the dark cover, through the graphics and special, shimmering “Metal” cards. The box is much too large, but people who want to put cards from the other parts in one package should do it without any problems and have room for more board games.
DC Batman Metal is a card game that I had a lot of fun with. I am rather neutral about the deck-building mechanics, but the choice of the universe and my favorite DC hero for the main role meant that the game will definitely stay with me and I will be looking at the next ideas from this series. In addition, the simplicity and accessibility of the rules defend themselves even without a topic, because as unfortunately often happens, we will not experience the climatic gameplay. It all comes down to gathering power and defeating more thugs, and it doesn’t matter whether it makes sense to the storyline. Still, it’s nice to look at the dark world with an excess of Batmans, so it will be an added value for fans of this character.
Batman Ninja expansion
This mini expansion can be attached to any of the DC Deck Building Game series bases . Introduces new Superheroes, Super Villains, and 21 cards from the main deck. Some of them allow you to use a new mechanic called Ninjutsu. They can be played as normal cards and not be used. However, if we use it, the card is returned to the bank and others will be able to buy it.
Another change is strengthening the Super Villains, i.e. adding cards from the bank to their edges. They must comply with the markings, i.e. have the same category. After defeating such a thug, his buffs go to the player. Then we have to deal with his retaliation described below. The last action to be performed is to turn the Super Rogue over and build a castle. We will have to defeat the combined forces of five enemies and the mega-castle they created.
Extra cards are always a plus in card games. Powering up the Super Villains is an interesting idea, and so is increasing your bank after using a Ninjutsu action. Thugs do not give us points at the end, because they do not go to our deck, but we get their buffs and points for defeating the castle. I preferred the stand solution when the dead were mine, but the other ideas and new rules are interesting enough to consider purchasing an add-on. You can keep the cards separate and separate the decks if you want to go back to the original version. There are few of them and they are labeled “Batman Ninja”, so it will only take us a moment.
I invite you to dark Gotham
Regardless of whether it is with or without an add-on – DC Batman Metal is a very enjoyable card game. First of all, I recommend it to fans of this character and the entire universe. It also works well as an introduction to the deck-building mechanics. The whole game revolves around cards, so there are no additional rules to distract and distract from assembling your own set. The card game will definitely stay on my shelf. I will come back to the previous parts as I haven’t had the chance to play all of them and I am looking forward to the next ones that (I hope!) Will be released by Egmont.
