Latest trailer
We recently got from Warner Bros. the first teaser trailer of the hugely announced feature film Barbie . I am very happy that thanks to the participation of famous stars, the doll will gain more interest. At the same time, I am full of skepticism – especially after watching the trailer.
Already the first photos from the set made me understand that director Greta Gerwig is going in a completely different direction than the one I was hoping for the most. I dreamed of returning to the roots of Barbie productions , to fairy-tale lands full of magic, often inspired by ballet or already existing stories. For animation, where the strong and courageous main character always played the first violin, a role model. On top of that, usually a princess or a fairy, and what little girl wouldn’t want to be one of them?
However, this is no reason to panic. Seeing the neon outfits of the actors in the photos from the set, I came to the conclusion that the film would be something like the TV series Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse . The title doll plays herself in it, and the production is cute, funny and definitely has its own, unmistakable character. I’d love to see something like this on the big screen.
Unfortunately, I’m afraid I was wrong hoping for something similar to Life in the Dreamhouse . After the trailer, I got the impression that the new Barbie movie will go completely towards comedy and only comedy, maybe with some kitsch. I keep my fingers crossed that it won’t be like this at all and in the acting production we will see the same values behind which the puppet always stands. Even in those shorter titles like the series mentioned above.
Casting
I have to admit that Margot Robbie in the lead role is a bull’s-eye. Unfortunately, I don’t have such positive feelings about another important character, which may cause some controversy. Ryan Gosling definitely doesn’t fit the role of Ken in my opinion. Barbie’s boyfriend is very sweet looking, young and fits into the most coveted and common beauty canon (sorry Ken, most people would find you handsome, but there is nothing special about your beauty). That’s not to say there’s anything wrong with Ryan Gosling’s looks – he just doesn’t look like Ken. I think Henry Cavill or Noah Centineo would be much better in this role. Both gentlemen look more “sweet” than Ryan and fit into the universal canon of beauty.
No panic
Well, despite the impression the trailer made on me, I try to think positively. Let’s remember that in the trailer we only see a tiny piece of the film, so maybe when we learn more about the plot, I can regain faith that Barbie will be the beginning of a new era of live-action productions about my favorite doll.
