James Cameron is currently shooting both Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 . If the films are successful, Disney will agree to produce the next two parts. In an interview with the director of Dune, he revealed that the action of the long-awaited sequel will take the viewer not only to Pandora, but also to various places on Earth. As the director said:
Well it was a tough decision because I either wanted to get it right or I just didn’t want to do it. I had just made this – I think strange – decision that whatever I have to say artistically about the things that mattered to me, I can say within a universe that I knew could become. Just as Dune happens in different worlds, the next Avatar is between the worlds… certainly between the two worlds, as part of the story takes place on Earth as the action unfolds, and the different biomes in these worlds.
Additionally, he confirmed that the draft of the second part is ready and now VFX are being added to it. The three is not fully formed yet, as the director is going to cut it short. Both films are to be shot simultaneously to match the actors’ graphics and not to be shot twice in the same place.
Avatar 2 is scheduled for release on December 16, 2022. Avatar 3 is likely to be released two years later.
