Frozen hero
A scientist finds himself aboard an abandoned colony ship. He finds a whole lot of people in hibernation there. At this point, he can only release one person, that is our hero (heroine). For saving his life, he wants to help restore order in Arcadia. We also need to find a way to unfreeze the remaining colonists. In the game world, we will travel the edges of space. The planets were colonized by Earthlings and privatized by huge corporations. On the first planet we come across, there is a town where the main workplace is a canning factory, and the employees do not say a single bad word to their employer. There is an extreme type of capitalism here, in which human life is pushed to the background.
An old-fashioned RPG
At the beginning of the game, using the extensive editor, we create our character and give it a name. Using the available points, we assign her skills and features typical of previous games of the genre, i.e. hand-to-hand combat, the use of ranged weapons, persuasion or hacking skills. With each level we gain, we can of course develop them. After some time, we also choose the advantages that help in further travel. In terms of gameplay, the first thing that comes to mind is one of the studio’s previous games, Fallout: New Vegas. We explore new locations in search of tasks to perform, items, weapons and outfits for our character. We use the obtained goods to fight enemies and improve the hero. We also have a lot of long conversations with the inhabitants of certain areas we meet. The tasks we undertake are extensive, and many of them can be completed in various ways. Sometimes better results can be obtained with diplomacy than with force. Words can both extract a lot of interesting information from the characters we meet, and make us convince them to be right. They are both extremely colorful and each of them, with the right approach, will have something interesting to convey to us. Side characters have their own stories, plans, and dreams. In time, companions may join our team. In addition to helping in combat and traversing local areas, we learn more and more about them over time. It is true that there is no possibility of establishing a romance with them, but they are so colorful that you want to talk to them, getting to know them better and better. It is they, apart from the world depicted, who are the main factor attracting to the game.
Simple combat system
The fight in The Outer Worlds is rather simple and did not arouse much emotions in me. The shooting system is neither very good nor bad. You can say that it just is, so most of the game I tried to avoid clashes with opponents. The hero can also slow down the passage of time for a while, but it does not introduce much variety while dealing with enemies. Luckily, the battles aren’t too demanding – on medium difficulty, the enemies don’t use intelligence.
It looks and sounds nice
The game locations are well planned – apart from the cities, we can find really detailed and colorful environments. Character models can also be considered a plus. I haven’t experienced any lag reloading textures, and the individual locations load very quickly. I also didn’t come across any more serious bugs that could spoil the gameplay. Each character has a voice and voice acting is high. The music playing in the background as you travel through the locations is well suited and makes exploration more enjoyable.
Summary
The Outer Worlds consists of elements that we already know well. The creators decided to use proven patents and place them in a new world, which, together with the heroes who inhabit it, are the greatest advantages of this production. The greatest fun is discovering the next levels, getting to know their inhabitants and interacting with them. I enjoyed the game so much that I was not disturbed by the unremarkable combat system. If you missed a game like Fallout: New Vegas , The Outer Worlds , despite its shortcomings, will offer you a lot of satisfaction.
