In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress who plays Yennefer revealed that the cast found out about Cavill’s departure after the completion of the third season.
We had the feelings we have when any season comes to an end. So pride, love and fulfillment for what we’ve done. The message was…yes, it’s hard to take because [Henry Cavill] is a key part of the show and we all love him. So we will miss him very much. I wish him all the best.
Chalotra told Entertainment Weekly.
In the fourth season, Liam Hemsworth will play Geralt, who reportedly auditioned for the role a few years ago. Cavill has long been a big fan of Sapkowski’s books, and apparently that may have had something to do with his departure from the show. There is no official information on the reasons for the actor’s departure, but Cavill openly said that he would like the series to refer to the work of writer Andrzej Sapkowski. Respect for the source material apparently caused tensions between Cavill and showrunner Lauren Hissrich.
Ironically, the show’s final season with Cavill seems to be the closest thing to the books that inspired it. Fans of the series will have the opportunity to see for themselves when the first part of the third season of The Witcher will be released on June 29 .
