Below we present a fragment of the novel made available by the Replika Publishing House:
The Danes slowly lifted the ladders and leaned them against the walls noiselessly. This was where the bottom was visible, so you could easily complete the task. After a while, they began to climb. They stopped on the ladders, invisible to the Franks on the wall, and waited. There were thirty archers in the camp outside of Hvitserk, who now came ashore and drew their bowstrings facing the city. At the corner sign, the Frankish soldiers immediately looked at the Viking camp. Before they understood what was happening, they were greeted by a barrage of Danish arrows.
– Attack! Ivar shouted, and was the first to jump onto the walls, where he was greeted by two defenders. He killed them right away before they could even blink. Then the warriors moved in the eastern direction. However, they only walked several dozen meters without hitting any defenders. After a while, they met them densely dotted on the walls. The purpose of Ivar’s squad was clear. Their task was to clear the walls of soldiers so that they could not throw stones on the boats commanded by Ragnar. Then his men would climb the walls unhindered and the siege could be considered complete. Boneless without any fear or doubt, at the head of his people, like the edge of an arrowhead piercing a shield, he walked with sword and ax in hand, slashing anyone who stood in his way. The wall was quite wide and Eskil the White moved freely on its left side, astonishing enemies just before dying with the color of their skin. The other Vikings did not have much room to attack. They formed a wall of shields on the fortifications, which shielded them from all sides except the one where the fighting took place. Ivar slashed one of the soldiers in the neck with his ax, ripping it open, then pushed the unfortunate man behind him. Another bumped into his sword. The third said goodbye to his hand cut off at the shoulder, only to fall to the ground and be killed by another Vikings. At one point, the Frankish soldiers stopped attacking. They formed a squad of archers to strike enemies with arrows. Ivar slashed one of the soldiers across the neck with his ax, ripping it open, then pushed the unfortunate man behind him. – Shield wall !!! Ivar exclaimed, noticing the threat almost immediately. The warriors quickly shielded him and Eskil with their shields, so the iron spikes slammed into the insurmountable wooden barrier. After a while, the same thing happened with the second series – and from that, neither of the arrows hit the target either.
– Forward!!! Bezosny gave another order, and the warriors in tight formation began to move forward. At the same time, soldiers from the rear reached them, trying to destroy their formation. The Vikings, without opening the wall, stabbed them in the gaps between their shields, wounding and killing them one by one. There were also casualties on the Vikings side. Two warriors have already died. However, this was a minor loss compared to what the Franks had suffered so far. The shield wall kept moving forward. In the end, the invaders formed a hastily organized formation of soldiers which, without formation, but only in close combat, wanted to fight them off with their advantage. Ivar’s squad pressed against a strong obstacle. The Franks initially put up a solid resistance, but with time they began to withdraw, which was used by the Danes. When they beat their enemies into a very dense group, they began to stab them with swords everywhere, killing them one by one. Suddenly, they lowered their shields and, like hungry animals, attacked the frightened and shocked soldiers.
Ivar – as is Ivar – with his devilish smile, at the sight of which many of the Franks dropped his pants, slashed and slashed the defenders of Paris. He slashed one across the abdomen, cutting it open until guts came out on top, and tore the other into a cast with an ax blow from below. Another pierced his throat right through with his sword, which, coming out from behind, wounded another soldier in the face, tearing his eye. The man howled in pain as the blood streamed over his face. In a rush of adrenaline, he began swinging his sword frantically left and right. He hurt two of his companions this way, but after a while Ivar stepped between them and killed them individually.
In the wake of Ivar, Eskil the White was harvesting his harvest. Bezbostny’s closest companion swung his ax at one of his rivals, thrusting it into the shoulder. He then pulled the huddled man against him to kick him with his knee in the face. Then he pushed the stunned soldier behind him, where other warriors killed him. With a battle cry on his lips, the white warrior moved on to murder and destroy with the rest of the squad.
Despite the fact that Ivar’s squad was outnumbered, his squad progressed smoothly. The number of the Franks was useless in the small space provided by the walls. Now it was ruled by strength and agility, which was entirely on the side of the invader.
– Lord! One of the people shouted to Charlemagne. – The Vikings got to the North Walls! They broke through our defense!
– What a miracle? After all, there were no ships there!
“They ran aground, my lord!” What to do?
– Damn it! Said the king, wringing his hands. He was famous for his courage and being a great strategist, but since he lost the fight on the border with Denmark, he changed, something broke in him and he was afraid of making any decisions, especially when he had to do it quickly. He was no longer at all great, as his nickname proclaimed. Ivar and Ragnar had burned a permanent mark on him that changed him, perhaps forever. – My son is in charge – he stammered after a moment, noticing Ludwik. Seeing the soldier reporting to the king, he immediately approached and learned about the Viking invasion of the city walls.
– More people need to be sent there! He decided without thinking long. – We can’t let them open the gate. Then they will pour into the city like locusts that destroy everything in its path. We have to keep them there.
