Short anthologies are the type of publication that I always reach for with great pleasure. When I also see that one of my favorite Polish authors wrote it, I’m definitely bought.
I perfectly remember the beginnings of my love for the writing of Aneta Jadowska. The soul thief with his first cover stole my heart from the very first pages (unfortunately the covers of the following volumes from the first edition of the hexalogy about Dora hurt my soul), and with each subsequent one my feelings only grew. Since I had the Pumpkin and Mistletoe anthology on my catch-up list for a long time, I received the opportunity to review it for the portal, like a very nice gift. But was it hit?
Something for autumn and snowflakes
The collection consists of ten texts set around Halloween and Christmas. In my opinion, this is a perfectly matched time space, because thanks to this the book is suitable for reading both for Pumpkin Spice Latte for each autumn tree, and for mulled wine for those who are already kicking their feet in anticipation of the first star. It is worth mentioning, however, that before reaching for it, one should read at least a little about Jadowska’s work, because the main characters in the stories are mainly heroes and heroes known from her earlier books.
Thank you already
I would like to say that each of the texts included in the publication was delicious and engaging from the beginning to the end, and all the adventures aroused a lot of emotions in me, but unfortunately it was not so. I blame my personal sympathies with specific characters here, because the only problem I have is with the lyrics about Anita. I evaluate each of the other stories positively, both in terms of the idea for the plot, style and humorous elements, as well as the behavior and motivation of the characters themselves. It was wonderful to see Dora or Roman again or meet Malina (to whom I will write a separate review soon) and the fact that everything happened during my favorite time of the year was absolutely fantastic.
And the podium will be … (drums)
Not wanting to spoil the entire book, let me describe a bit only the three best – in my opinion – texts. Something creeps in on a quiet night tells the story of an unexpected guest who shows up at the Koźlak family’s house during the Christmas season. Krampus, associated with, among others, Austrian folklore, half goat, half demon, kidnaps several family members, and Malina, who is also responsible for organizing the Christmas party, sets off to the rescue. A great story not only related to the reference from the German-speaking area that I like. It is also a perfect picture of a persistent family and high-profile holidays with many uncomfortable questions.
Like a dog and a cat is a humorous text about two shapeshifters. From the very beginning of their relationship, canine and cat-like play tricks on each other, which on the one hand give them a lot of satisfaction, on the other hand, boost the relationship they are building. At some point, however, a dangerous situation arises that threatens the life of one of them. Then it becomes clear how close the neighbors who eat each other on a daily basis are. It was great to read, especially because of the chemistry built up between the presented characters. I felt as if I had the work of Patricia Briggs in my hands.
The vampire who stole the saint tells the story of Roman’s undeserved revenge on Dora, which turns into a criminal case based on a murder from years ago. Reading this text, I forgot that it is only a story. Well developed and very addictive! He made me plan to re-read the hexalogy on Dora after the last sentence, because I felt unsatisfied!
Another good anthology
Pumpkin and mistletoe is a very good item for fans of Jadowska’s work, who like stories and those who have no problem with Anita. Good for those who, like me, do not like this character. The edition itself is very pleasant – hardcover, graphics from the wonderful Magda Babinska and a postcard with characters in the Halloween version attached to the cover. I recommend!
