A series inspired by the bestseller When the lights of British writer Alex Scarrow’s Last Light go outshows the history of the global energy crisis from the perspective of a separated family. Andy Yeats (Matthew Fox) is a high-profile petrochemical specialist who works for the oil giants in the Middle East, where he goes to find out about diminishing oil supplies. At the same time, his wife Elena (Joanne Froggatt) and his blind son Sam (Taylor Fay) are in France, where doctors are fighting to restore the boy’s eyesight. Only his daughter Laura (Alyth Ross), a staunch environmental activist, remains in his native London. Suddenly the world is hit by the biggest energy crisis in history. Oil supplies are running out, electricity is suddenly scarce, and the increasing uncertainty and the inability to meet basic life needs make people go out to protest on the streets. Overnight, the lives of the world’s inhabitants are turned upside down, and chaos and violence lurk around the corner. Will the family survive in this hostile world?

When it turns out that the crisis most likely did not occur due to natural causes, Andy becomes one of the prime suspects due to a research paper written years ago. British MI6 services intend to arrest him as soon as he arrives in Great Britain. At the same time, Andy discovers the cause of the energy crisis and realizes that with this knowledge it will not be easy for him to survive. He has to take care of himself and whom he trusts, because at stake is not only the fate of his family, but also of the world.
