So far, I have come across the Novae Res publishing house on the occasion of the memorable review of M. Pioruńska's Fortress Kimerid , so bearing in mind that nightmare, I sat down with a lot of reserve and skepticism to read The Necromancer's Apprentice . What came out of it? This review will tell you about it.
The story “ordered” chaos
Let’s start with the plot, because its description is the most difficult thing for me to do in this article. I have no idea how to put into words what is contained in a book. We have a lot of threads and many characters here. Most of them appear only occasionally, but their impact on the further development of events and on the main characters is considerable. The author made sure that every, even the most innocent event, was the basis for the grand finale. The main axis of the plot is Norgal’s childhood and youth. This boy does not know his parents and is being raised by a Master and his sister, the Master. With time, he discovers a talent for necromancy. Then it turns out that his guardian is also engaged in this dark art. Norgal decides to study with him. He does not know that this is just the beginning of his great adventure full of amazingness, and its finale will change the face of the world. Together with the Rage living in his mind, he will have to do everything to prevent the apocalypse and not to give his head to the ax for practicing dark magic.
Let us conclude that I will finish the description of the plot here, because, as I mentioned, the number of side plots is simply overwhelming, and the crowd of characters introduced on the pages of the book is almost impossible to remember.
A few words about the literary workshop …
However it may seem, the book has been extremely well written. The characters are expressive and their adventures attract attention. The idea for the novel itself is really original, but there are also classic fantasy themes, such as a good number of races or the school of magic. The world itself seems alive and relatively realistic despite the fact that all the action is set in practically one city. However, not everything is so colorful. The worst language in terms of the story and the creation of the world in general is the language of the book and a rather annoying feature of the narrator. First, the vocabulary used to describe events is more appropriate for the language of a poet than an epic. The author creates multi-story descriptions that are largely unnecessary. Additionally, there is no golden mean in style. On one page, we can deal with both a high language praising someone’s beauty and a vulgar dialect describing sex scenes. Being on the erotic layer of the novel, I must point out that it appears too often, and some of its scenes are downright disgusting. This is the first book I have read to describe the course of rape. Never again. The author has problems with the pen, because where the action should be fast, it delays it too much, and where it is not, the opposite is true. It gets boring in the long run. Additionally, the narrator has a rather tiresome feature of summarizing events in advance. In fact, after the first chapter, you can predict how the song will end. and some of its scenes are downright disgusting. This is the first book I have read to describe the course of rape. A release without a frenzy …
Regarding the visual layer, you don’t want to stick to anything too much. There are typos and typos here and there, but that’s okay. The addition of maps on the covers and the relatively good grammage of the paper deserve praise. Is fine.
In conclusion, Apprentice Necromancer is an average book at best. A good plot has been ruined by a nightmarish language. You can read, but you don’t have to.
