Above the ouija board – review of the board game “Paranormal detectives”

Imagine a simulation of a ghost calling ritual – a group of strangers who take part in this atmospheric game gathers around the victim’s mortal remains, watching them with fascination … The participants do not realize that the best is yet to come.

Paranormal Detectives is a creative party board game with criminal elements. The game, which is assumed to last a little less than an hour, can be played by two to six players (the scalability is rather poor – it’s best to target the option from 4 players up!). One of the players takes on the role of a recently deceased character, now a Ghost. Others choose which Detective they want to be – five alternatives are available. The Ghost tries to communicate with the characters gathered around the board (ouii?) By responding to various ways available to him, e.g. by arranging the Cords of the Hanged Man, playing Tarot Cards, directing the drawing Detective’s hand or arranging word puzzles on the Board. The ghost’s task is to lead other players in the game to the murderer’s trail, and all this is to do justice to justice!Paranormal Detectives is similar to another game – Secret House , although it is much more involving!

Paranormal Detectives Boxit is quite large because it holds many pieces – the main board, instructions, thirty-five interaction cards, seventeen tarot cards, three ghost interaction cards, twenty-eight story cards, five detective curtains, five detective sheets, ghost sheet, parchment, six markers, two hangman’s cords, five conversation indicators, ten injury indicators, and three spirit meter indicators (i.e. a slider label for size, color, weight, speed, etc.). Importantly, as can be seen from the contents of the box, during the game there will probably be a reference to the themes of death, violence, drugs and sex, so an adult player should control the content of cards that would appear during the game with younger audiences (the preferred age of players is 12 +).

Guessing how the ghost person died ends the game, but before that happens, the participants have to work hard! Initially, because we know just who is our victim looked like and where she had wounds, the rest of the features of the crime we have to guess, asking questions, for example. ” Who is responsible for the death of the victim?”, ” Where there has been death?”, ” Why somebody brought until the victim’s death? ”,“ how did the character die? ”,“ whatwas she killed? ”. A slight downside of the game is the fact that more creative questions are not rewarded, so most of the participants limit themselves to asking only the simplest ones, that is … in total, the ones I gave above or even their shortened formula: “who?”, “Where?”, ” why? “,” how? “,” what? “. When deciding on the game, we can choose the standard or cooperative variant, it all depends on the party concept that best suits the participants of the game. Some of the hints require more creativity from us – laying with strings, pantomime or drawing someone else’s hand, others – a spirit meter, ouija board – are biased, but also make the participants laugh.
