A worthy return of Michael Myers – review of the movie “Halloween Kills”

The Halloween series clearly needed a break. The following parts became more and more absurd, and finally it came to the point where you had to say a loud and clear “STOP”. The 2018 movie Halloween directed by David Gordon Green turned out to be the cure for all of Michel Myers’ problems . After three years, the direct continuation of the story was released – Halloween kills .

Terrorized town

The events presented on the screen take place right after the end of the previous part. Michael is trapped in a burning house, and Laurie Strode with her daughter and granddaughter go to the hospital. Unfortunately for them, it turns out that the murderer gets out of the trap and starts murdering the inhabitants of Haddonfield again. Tired of fear and terror, citizens decide to take matters into their own hands and get rid of the persecutor once and for all.

A heroic collectivity

Speaking of the newest part of Halloweenit is necessary to mention a radical change in the narrative method and the protagonist herself. Green chose to sidetrack Laurie (traditionally played by Jamie Lee Curtis) and focused on all the townspeople. This is the first film in the series where bystanders aren’t just cannon fodder – people who have been terrorized for over 40 years want to finally take matters into their own hands and get rid of the evil haunting Haddonfield. This procedure allowed the viewer to get acquainted not only with the personal drama of Laurie and her relatives, but also with every other family damaged by Myers. It also gave the opportunity to introduce many references to the first film from 1978 – a perfect example is the character of Tommy Doyle: the boy Laurie dealt with in the 1970s is now at the head of the Michael hunting group. and the man himself justifies his actions by wanting to repay him for saving his life in his youth. The director winks at the viewers almost all the time, so older fans of the series can feel satisfied.

Hospital horror

Green understands how bad Michael Myers is and how much damage he has done to the people of Haddonfield. His legend has taken root in social consciousness. When the news comes out that the murderer has returned, and the corpse is littered once again, the local hospital fills up with tearful and worried people. The segment that takes place in the hospital is one of the most important and most powerful in the movie. It is there that hatred, anger and overwhelming fear escalate, and the whole crowd decides to kill Michael. One small impulse is enough and the embittered inhabitants are able to kill anyone who appears to be Myers. The scene is strong because it perfectly shows how the terrified and angry crowd reacts. It turns out that Michael doesn’t have to murder himself – the terror he caused makes people able to kill each other.

Immortal shape

David Green also perfectly portrays the very figure of the masked murderer. Myers is unstoppable evil, a demonic force that cannot be killed. The viewer realizes practically from the very beginning that Michael is not like any other human – he comes out of the fire alive, only to deal with a whole squad of firefighters armed with hatchets a moment later. During his night walk, Michael does not spare anyone, and each of the people murdered by him dies in a completely different way. Of course, the film does not lack stupid deaths, during which you could hear a sigh of pity throughout the cinema, but I think this is a deliberate act of the director. Green makes the viewer aware that Myers will kill regardless of the circumstances, even completely by accident. Its mere presence can lead to a tragedy. The downside for some may also be stupid decisions of the heroes, but personally they did not bother me completely. Just like the fact that Michael, who moves slowly all the time, successfully catches up with escaping victims. The key to having fun during the screening is to understand the fundamental fact about the main antagonist – Michael Myers is not an ordinary man, but pure evil in materialized, human form, and there is no escape from evil. I think that’s what David Green is trying to convey. A foretaste of the finale

Halloween Kills is a really recommendable movie. You certainly cannot count on brilliant acting here, but it is perfectly correct; the actors do not stand out with anything special, but their performance does not interfere with the reception of the production. The music created by John Carpenter (the director of the original Halloween) and his son Cody fit together nicely, and fans of the series are sure to spot some musical references to the 1978 soundtrack. The most important thing, however, is having a good time, and I have to admit that I had quite a lot of fun in this movie. The ending perfectly sums up the role of Michael Myers and can definitely surprise some viewers. David Green did a great job with the second part of the trilogy and I am very curious what he will serve in the final, final episode – Halloween Ends.

We would like to thank the Cinema City chain for the opportunity to watch the movie Halloween Kills !
