A visit to Gorzów – review of the fourth issue of the magazine “LandsbergON”

The fourth issue of the semi-annual LandsbergON has just been released. We check whether the inhabitants of Gorzów did not run out of ideas for further fantastic stories.

Was it going to go wrong?

This is the fourth issue of the LandsbergON fantasy magazine from Gorzow . So far, I have had the pleasure to read and review each of them, so I’m glad that another one was in my hands. As in previous editions, so now it all starts with an introduction written by the editor-in-chief, Mariusz Sobkowiak. He tells about the difficult beginnings of the magazine and wonders himself how it was possible to publish not only the first issue, but also three subsequent ones. It is certainly comforting for the readers to say that LandsbergONis doing well. This means that we can expect its next installments! It’s nice to read how this passionate initiative is developing, and the city still wants to subsidize it. I keep my fingers crossed that everything will go in the right direction. And what new have the inhabitants of Gorzow prepared for us this time? We are already checking!

New heroes and old friends

The first of the stories that we can read in the latest issue of LandsbergON are Adit Hallibriar . Their author is Jakub Soborak, blogger and editor of the Kyaa magazine !. The story he tells is about a visually impaired boy called the Blind and his girlfriend Calelne, who live in the town of Hallibriar. As you read, many questions come to mind. We know virtually nothing more about the armies of Sevrovia or Aydelareth mentioned. It is also difficult to understand what kind of magic works here, or what is mined in the local mine. So everything looks a bit inconsistent and leaves a lot of understatement. However, at the very end, we can read that this is only a fragment of the planned cycle. Thanks to this information, we look at the whole story in a completely different way. I hope that its author will manage to publish a book in the future, because I will be happy to learn more about the world he describes.

The already mentioned Mariusz Sobkowiak decided to add his short story as well. The Twilight of the Gods was written in the form of a letter signed by Pope Sylvester II and addressed to Otto III. It tells about evil spirits who want to possess (or have already possessed) the head of the church. There are also many indications that humanity will soon face its extinction. Thanks to its first-person form, the story feels even more targeted at the reader and arouses a lot of emotion, which makes it a great read to read.

Have you ever wondered if you really exist? This is the question asked by the author of the short story The Case of Alicja K. – Kamil Kwiatkowski. The protagonist looks for answers in various ways. Sometimes he goes to parties, then he devotes himself to philosophical deliberations again. However, neither she nor the reader knows for sure if Alice is actually alive?

Finally, we can read the second part of The Tale of Wanda from Gorzów . I admit that I counted on the fact that I would know the fate of Olgierd, Igor and the creature living in the sewers of Gorzów, who “did not want a German”. I was not disappointed. This time our heroes enlist the help of the army, which is to solve the problem of the bloodthirsty creature. Jakub Łukasik creates a lot of tension by showing us the preparations for the mission. Then he throws us into the middle of the action, where the bullets whistle. And he leaves us at the most interesting moment. This is not done! I hope in the next issue we will find out what happened next.

Don’t move without pictures!

For these few issues, LandsbergON has already developed a certain pattern. We always get an introduction at the beginning, and then stories. Inside, however, there are always paintings or photos created by local artists. This time we can admire the drawings of the ambassador of Gorzów, Iwona Mazur. They refer to the fragment of the house at 21 Łokietka Street shown on the cover. A carved dragon with an open mouth shows us that fantastic creatures have always been liked in the city. Moreover, Krzysztof Swarczyński presents his works. The teacher of drawing and painting presents extremely colorful, but also formidable paintings. Especially the bat-man (no, it’s not about Batman) could become the hero of a horror movie. And it’s pretty good.

May it be until September!

Fourth issue of LandsbergONshould be counted among the next success of the NOVUM Association. Although the stories themselves are fewer, they are longer, which allows you to get closer to their characters and experience their adventures with them. An interesting form is also throwing in fragments that are to interest the recipient. For example, to continue the story of Wanda, I am already waiting for the next installment of the magazine. Unfortunately, there is also one drawback that publishers will have to work on. There were a few bugs in the issue. It is not about spelling, but more about errors in the composition. In many places, there is no dash that would let us know that one of the characters is saying something or events are being described. There was also a hitting enter too early, so we have a few words, then an empty line and continue on to the next one. Sometimes a paragraph also starts in the wrong place, what should. Fortunately, this is something that does not interfere with reading and will probably be eliminated quickly. So I encourage you to read and check again if Gorzów is still fantastic.
