A team for special tasks – a review of the comic book “Authority”, vol. 1

If you’re looking for a comic book that you can get into on the run and don’t need to explore the entire huge back story for it , I have something for you! A novelty from the Egmont publishing house is a real firecracker and a roller coaster ride. Buckle up and meet the hardcore superheroes from the Authority team .

I haven’t met such a set of characters in comics yet. Meet the delightful Jenny Sparks, the strong and authoritarian team leader who wields electricity. The team also includes a Doctor – a shaman who has a lot of knowledge inherited from previous Doctors. A mechanic, on the other hand, is a woman in whose veins instead of blood flow a few liters of liquid nanotechnology. In addition, a perfectly harmonious duo (and privately a marriage) of Apollo, known as the king of the sun and a super-trained murderer of Midnighter. We cannot forget about Swift – a winged hunter and a man who understands the spirit of the cities, Jack Hawksmoore. They are not standard heroes, but a self-proclaimed team of beings who are even ready to make heroic sacrifices and want to fight in defense of the Earth according to their beliefs.

A bit about history

Album Authority is a collection of comics originally published in the US in The Authority # 1-12 and Wildstorm: A celebration of 25 years . The script was created by British writer, comic book and TV writer Warren Ellis ( Batman, Hellblazer: Setting Sun, Avengers: Endless Wartime, Stormwatch, X-Men: Excalibur ). Brian Hitch ( Justice League, Captain America: Reborn, The Ultimates and many others) and Phil Jimenez ( Teen Titans, DC Rebirth # 1, Superwoman # 1- 8 ).

Hit it, kill it and don’t ask what’s next

This publication contains a huge dose of action. The heroes created by Ellis must first defeat a cruel megalomaniac, then stop the interdimensional invasion, and eventually even face some older god and rightful inhabitant of Earth. Along the way, however, they do not lose their spirit, which can be seen especially in spoken lines such as ” It is itching as hell to crush someone’s brain!” “. They are definitely direct characters in contact, and at the same time rough with dark experiences. Such a team more like from The Boys series than the Avengers or members of the Justice League.

Baking guaranteed

My impressions after reading are extremely positive (although I do not like the series The Boys mentioned in the comparison ). The discovery of a new team of superheroes turned out to be a great breath of fresh air, especially since recently I read mainly series about characters I have known for a long time. The plot was fantastically thought out and composed. Despite a lot of information provided on an ongoing basis, the reading was not overwhelming and it was possible to keep up with the assimilation of either names or events from the past that influenced current situations. Certainly, it should be added that this is not an album for people looking for light and joyful stories. Here at times the world literally collapses, so how could it be colorful?

I highly recommend Authority to all adult comic book fans. Great plot, strong characters, fast-paced action and brilliant graphics. And if that was not enough – a beautiful edition of Egmont.
