A Movie As Good As Screaming Space Goats – Review of “Thor: Love and Thunder”

Another movie straight out of the Marvel franchise that, while trying to develop its characters, does nothing new in terms of storytelling. However, humor and aesthetics hit the spot.

Another typical Thor adventures in space

Buckle up! Thor will take us all on a space adventure with the Guardians of the Galaxy! Except actually not. Previews of Thor: Love and Thunderheralded the return of favorite heroes. The guards in this production appeared, but their screen time was definitely too short. Of course, this is not surprising. It is, after all, a story about a favorite god of lightning… ie thunder. The title protagonist gathers the team to defeat the evil Gorra. The entire story was directed by Taika Waititi. As befits this artist, there is a lot of humor in the film. From situational jokes, through repetitive space goats, ending with nudity. The comedic aspect of this movie is definitely exaggerated. Each scene must have something that should make the viewer laugh. Unfortunately, there is far too much comedy in this production. Especially in monumental scenes, where viewers should be delighted with the views and the world of narration. And remember one thing on this topic:space goats , never enough screaming space goats.

Acting game and antagonist

In the movie Thor: Love and Thundercharacters and actors already met by Marvel fans are back. Chris Hemsworth played Thor really well. The typical men’s struggle with emotions and an attempt to convey them through humor fit perfectly into his return to the new Asgard. It was this character that has evolved the most. The film’s director, Taika Waititi, dubbed Korg, the protagonist’s best friend. His pun, humor, and reasoning continue to surprise and amuse the entire audience. Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie) and Natalie Portman (Jane Foster) were also on the team of Thor’s space warriors. Their acting suits the characters, but I didn’t sense anything surprising. You can see that they stuck to the script and played as they could. Natalie Portman also plays the role of Mighty Thor in some moments and here it is so much interesting, that she was able to change her behavior 180 degrees. Emotions, random euphoria, interesting jokes – as befits a new heroine – saved the development of this character. The icing on the cake is Zeus, played by Russel Crowe, who appears briefly in the film but steals the show. The actors were chosen really well. On the other hand, there is Christian Bale, who played the role of Gorra, the antagonist. His acting is brilliant, but the main problem can be seen in the character idea. In what he does and why he continues to work as a godslayer. I don’t want to go into spoilers, but it seems to me that you could get even more from the character of such an actor. Especially that in the ending, the antagonist is very predictable at the same time, and on the other hand – considering the whole story and the pre-action of this character – completely unpredictable.

Effects and aesthetics reign supreme

As befits Marvel and Taika Waititi, the special effects are at a very high level. The scenery of various planets, especially Omnipotence City, surprises the viewer to a plus. You just look at this film nicely, everything sparkles with colors. The selection of frames, materials in the scenery and clothes of the heroes – these elements are full of trinkets, flavors, references and look interesting. The queen, however, remains a certain planet, which I will not tell too much about due to spoilers, but I will mention a few facts. The use of a black and white filter on it and the exchange of music that blurs in action scenes for something bolder emphasized the emotions of the characters. Especially since the camera is then closer to the characters’ faces and the frames are longer. The viewer on this planet focuses more on the lives of the created characters, and not on the humor itself.

Something new is missing

The music is a really good comparative metaphor for this movie. In Thor: Ragnarok , which is Thor’s previous story from 2017, Mark Mothersbaugh was the lead composer. In my opinion, the music in that part stood out with its pace and was a perfect addition to the story. In the movie Thor: Love and Thunderthe soundtrack was created by Michael Giacchino and Nami Melumad. Their work in isolation from the film sounds really good, but due to the amount of action and humor it blends into a whole that could often be heard before. It is the same with production itself. The individual elements have a really great potential – they are different from other Marvel creations. Interesting plot tropes, great humor or beautiful scenery – all of this disappears after being summed up. The viewer, following the plot, will sooner or later remember that this is another story about superheroes, where good always wins, and our favorite heroes will return anyway. It’s a pity, because, for example, such a Jane Foster thread would have ended differently, if not for the scene after the credits. Which, by the way, is not worth waiting for, unless you are really big MCU fans.

We invite you to the movie Thor: Love and Thunder to the Cinema City network !

Nasza ocena: 6/10

Taika Waititi wanted to surprise everyone with his ideas, and in some places he has managed to do so. Unfortunately, he forgot to watch the previous parts of the MCU, as there is often no real news.
