Bad Guys is an adaptation of the popular book series by Australian writer Aaron Blabley. After success in his home country, Blabley presented them to audiences in the United States. Dreamworks representatives met with him and convinced him that their studio was the best place to bring these popular books to the big screen. The script was developed by Etan Cohen, already known from such films as The Idiocracy , The Eggs in the Tropics , or Madagascar 2 . The producer of the film, Damon Ross, recalls:
Aaron and I both thought about Etana from the very beginning. He had experience in animation, but also wrote scripts for cult comedy films. We had a feeling that the character of these characters would suit him and that he would be able to transfer it all to another medium in a good way.

The script prepared by Cohen became the perfect implementation of these intentions, and at the same time it was not a literal adaptation of the first part of the book series – the story loosely weaves together elements from the first four episodes. It was directed by Pierre Perifel, for whom the very idea of the film turned out to be very stimulating. For a director, even the shortest moments in life can be a great inspiration.
The day when I saw the cover of “Mr. Wolf and Company” was one of them – admits Perifel. – Wolf, shark, snake and piranha in black suits on an orange background. There was clarity, brilliant simplicity, which at the same time contained a great idea – incredibly attractive and incredibly funny at the same time. Etan Cohen managed to capture the characters and the tones of the books in such a delightful way that it was immediately obvious that bad friends had to become movie stars.
Perifel wanted to make this film in a way that would not be expected:
The world of Mr. Wolf and his crew wanted to change what classic animated films usually showed. I immediately saw paintings by Steven Soderbergh, Guy Ritchie or Quentin Tarantino in it. I saw the mastery of the action of Japanese anime and the colorful quirkiness of the French graphic novels I grew up with. As well as soundtracks from movies about bank robberies and the pleasant, jazzy chic of British cinema. It was all there and it was amazing.
In this mixture of styles and inspiration, the director and his crew found a method. The brilliantly written characters add incredible depth of humor, and the story is full of references to cult movies. The animation of Dreamworks studio, full of the best fun, takes us for a spin and will surprise you with the freshness of its form.
