What the willows humming aboutit is a fairy tale that is considered a pearl of English literature and has been screened many times. Recently, it was first published on the pages of a comic book, thanks to Michel Plessix. What does the team that prepared this volume offer us? Full-size, colorful characters, a unique sense of humor and tenderness towards nature, and a subtle and fantasy edition, what more could you want?
First volume
Spring… spring… For the heroes The Wind in the Willows is the time of cleaning first of all. When brooms and brushes go into a corner, they can enjoy the closeness of nature and… make new friends. The timid Mole decides to take advantage of a beautiful day and goes to the river. At first, he does not know that on the way he will meet a surprising meeting with a water-loving Rat, who knows the area like his own pocket. Later, the characters will also meet the admired Toad, who has not necessarily good ideas. The year of Crete started so intensely that he can be sure that the following months will bring him many surprises. And we will accompany him in these adventures, because the reviewed volume is the first in a series published by Egmont.
From the perspective of a child
The anthropomorphization of characters in fairy tales is not unusual, and you can really like the characters depicted, but the language of this fairy tale is highly literary and – as it may seem – unsuitable for audiences aged 5+. The publishers promise to read the comic for oneself (or reading with parents), but I can’t help but feel that the issue has not been properly prepared for it. The Wind in the Willows is beautifully bound (we are sure that the cover will survive many family evenings spent reading), but the content inside may not be understandable enough for small readers (and sometimes even for their parents …). However, it should not be forgotten that this is an adaptation of a fairy tale, which was published by a British author in 1908, and appeared in Poland 30 years later, thanks to the “Swarm” Publishing Society. In a word of summary – The Wind in the Willows is an interesting comic, dressed in a beautiful cover, but a bit too difficult – in content and message – for the youngest.
