“2012” – a year that was terrifying

According to the famous prophecy, in 2012 the world was to be completely destroyed. Today (still alive) we celebrate the anniversary of the premiere of one of the most popular catastrophe films of our years.

elżbieta kutarskaSome maliciously admit that the Maya responsible for writing the prophecies made a tragic mistake, mistaking 2012 for 2021. Given the events of recent months, we are becoming more and more inclined to believe it. It cannot be denied, however, that the creators made perfect use of the common atmosphere of fear and uncertainty that builds up around the potential end of the world as time goes on. The film premiered in 2009, just a few years before the planned cataclysms.

In the same year as the premiere, the action of the film begins. Scientists then discover dangerous phenomena in the sun with disastrous consequences for the earth. There are, however, skeptics who reject science, not believing that something bad could happen to them. The situation is also not improved by the fact that world leaders are focused on their own survival and securing the political elite that would rebuild the human population after the catastrophe, leaving ordinary people on their own. The plot, however, focuses on one of the ordinary citizens – Jackson Curtis, who does everything he can to save his family.

The film was directed by Roland Emmerich, who wrote the script together with Harald Kloser. John Cusack (Jackson Curtis), Amanda Peet (Kate Curtis), Liam James (Noah Curtis), Morgan Lily (Lilly Curtis), Tom McCarthy (Gordon Silberman), Danny Glover (Thomas Wilson, US President) and Thandie Newton (Laura Wilson, the president’s daughter). Although the film won 2 awards and 11 nominations (including for the Saturn statuette), it is not well remembered among fans. He is accused of, among other things, a banal plot, but also praised for impressive special effects. NASA also commented on the subject of the film, describing the production as the stupidest science-fiction movie.
